Westside school taken off the current bond issue for the time being. From conversations with the new Governor just today.....the money's available going forward are very much in question. There are so many projects that mean the world to all of the citizens of Wicomico County......but money is limited? Not one of the council members or the new executive want to deprive this new school....but if there's no $$$$$ this is the responsible step to take until the money is known to be available.

I just wasted an hour and a half of my life watching that crap! I feel sorry for the the kids of west salisbury school...I really do! But there are still other schools without AC as well like Northwestern Elementary so where is their air condition? I certainly hope that wasnt the fireworks you were talking about!

I watched but saw nothing of the kind. What was it supposed to be?

There was lots of whining about the decision to put the money for a new school on hold to see if it would make more sense to upgrade it instead, which makes a lot od sense.

Get rid of mackes, Beauchamp and don't fill the PIO position is a good start. Make deputies and all other employees with take home cars only used during working hours, pull all P-cards and any county employee making more than $50,000 take a 20% pay reduction.

Fiscally conservative moves.

Well done, Bob, delay until money may be available, abstain until it is.

I saw it from start to finish. Looks like it was loaded with Board of Education employees.

Remember it's all for the children. A nice building is great, but how can you pay for it when there is no tax base and most of us are barely getting by.

My central air system died three years ago. I don't have seven thousand to get it replaced, so I put in window units and they work fine.
If electrical is the problem then hire an electrician and get the building up to code and when the economy improves and jobs come back, it they ever come back, then talk to us about a new school.
My taxes went up an additional 500 this year due to the tax increase. It's due in December, and I didn't budget for this additional 500 dollars. I'm not alone, there are houses in foreclosure all over the county.
I'm tired of supporting the bottom feeders of this county and state! A new building won't improve the already shitty school system we have.
Until the Board of ED comes clean and shows us how the money is spent, I see no reason to support them.

I heard Bob say on Pac 14 that he had toured the school and wanted to have a "team" look at it before they borrow the money. That sounds like good thinking to me. Why not have a plan in place before you put us on the hook for interest payments. Common sense thinking - what a concept!

I heard one commentor ask if the Shorebirds were more important than the schools, which is an unfair question. The lease on the stadium is pure profit to the county. It puts money in the county coffers. The stadium also stimulates the economy of local businesses that supply their concession stands as well as printers and other small locally owned businesses. Mr. Culver did not say the school would not be repaired/renovated or a new one built. He said, POSTPONE until they knew how much or even IF the state was going to fund new construction. $27,000,000.00 is nothing to sneeze at. I applaud them taking this approach rather than throw us deep in debt only to have taxes increased down the road to repay the debt. Putting the Westside Collector road on hold is another good decision, it can wait. There is no hurry for that road to be built when so many other things are NEEDED. Our new County Executive obviously knows the difference between wants and needs. We need the river dredged to continue to bring barges in with gas and heating oil. We need the Shorebirds to continue to contribute to our economy. I believe Mr. Culver when he said the school would be postponed until he knows if we're getting the funding. He is a man of his word and I believe him until he gives me reason not to believe him.

Another commentor asked a good question of Dr. Fredricksen. What's going on with the county board of educations physical plant budget? Why aren't the necessary repairs budgeted and if they are, why aren't they being taken care of? If it's a question of money, where is the money that was budgeted being spent, if not on needed repairs and maintenance? Why are our schools in such disrepair when the Board of Ed receives more than 50% of the county budget? Time to tighten your belts over there at the BOE because this new administration has already begun to tighten theirs as is obvious after tonights meeting.

I can only imagine where you pulled this figure out of......

And you think anything 40K and under is a livable wage? No wonder this place has turned ghetto. Let just keep people in poverty. Let make sure people can not afford to OWN a home and contribute to our community.

Nice of you to decide what someones job is worth, ya know with all your FACTS and all.

What a .....

7:47 P.M. how about you take a 20% pay cut? What makes you any better?

Would the County Council have to approve funds for relocating various departments into rental facilities?

Anonymous said...

8:49, who is relocating to rental facilities?

If schools would close on Memorial Day and open Labor day the hottest days would be no school. The physical plant budget should be used to repair schools. Cut out all the professional days/four day weekends. It seems students are off more days that they attend. I like Bob Culvers approach to not spend money we don't have.

I wish the county could decidentify about these professional days...I can't stand them.
However I think the contracts given by the boe states that the teachers need these days to learn new games etc.

8:16 pm post - Finally some intelligent observation and comments. You are spot on! This is how I hope most people feel instead of that crazy ranting from some that went on last night. I also agree with Marc Kilmer that we need to worry about what goes on inside the classroom as much, if not more, that what the building looks like.

Clean up the rest of the Bd of Ed and who knows how much $$$$ there'd be!

I know i went to school 45 years ago, and the temps. were 93 or greater on many days. wwe went to school AND OPENED THE WINDOWS!. Stayed the entire day. And learned.
These students are whimps and parents childish. AC is NOT a right. It's a luxury they don't need.
I went to Prince street for 6 years, Wi Jr. for 3 years and WiHi for 3 years. Not one room eVer air conditioned and WE never missed a day because of heat.
SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT NO AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!

More racial bull crap. Call it like it is. Salisbury Middle is a state of the art school located in the very neighborhood Ashanti and her KLAN state has been "ignored" Mary Ashante is the biggest racist in Wicomico County.

The N.A.A.C.P. needs to find someone who is in their right mind to take over.

Nothing more then the old race card being played again and again.

I don not hear her speaking out for West Side Primary. It is just sickening that anyone has to listen to her rhetoric.

dittos 9:03...no a/c. windows open. a fan (sometimes). our education was far and away better than today's crap. now, with common core communist indoctrination, it's worse than crap; it's the END of America and the American Dream. Your children will be marching lockstep with the U.N. How exciting. Are you excited for your children in the public (government) schools? This is the parents fault. For most it's just a baby sitting source. Oh well, have a great day...

December 2, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Yes and that is what they plan on doing with the employees that are working in the portables right next to the Central Office. John Fredericksen let those buildings rot without maintaining them. Now they want to rent an old store nearby to relocate them. Not only will they have to pay rent, they will have to pay a boat load to renovate that location. John Fredericksen and his staff has cost the tax payers millions of dollars. This is called RAPE.

Why can't the teachers learn their new games etc. during the Summer. Those professional days is the reason we start back before labor day.

Make the days longer to make up for those extra days. I think the schools should end before Memorial Day and start back up the day after Labor Day.

3:26--I wonder if the County Council and Bob Culver know about this. Also, it's known that the WCBOE is holding sessions throughout the county to discuss the facilities master plan. That includes a central office move to East Salisbury many years from now, but are they telling about the immediate move to rental space? Guess we can judge transparency by whether they are or aren't.
