Pitts, Harris Press NIH For Answers Regarding $2 Million Awarded to Dr. Jonathan Gruber

Letter: “Recent developments related to Dr. Gruber raise questions about his objectivity, judgment, and thus the utility of his research.”

Washington –
Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, and Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (R-MD), Appropriations Committee, today sent a letter to Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health, regarding NIH grant money provided to Dr. Jonathan Gruber. Pitts and Harris write, “Recent developments related to Dr. Gruber raise questions about his objectivity and judgment, and thus the utility of his research.”

The letter explains that Dr. Gruber “is on pace to receive a total of over $2 million.” Pitts and Harris are seeking more information about the NIH grant approval process, if NIH has considered rescinding Dr. Gruber’s grant funding in light of recent reports about his judgment, and if this grant was given priority over other research areas such as Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia, or cancer.

Read the complete letter online HERE.

Congressman Harris is the only member of Congress who has performed research funded by the National Institutes of Health. He is the only physician serving on the Appropriations Committee and serves on the subcommittee that oversees NIH funding.
