Alex Guerrero Brings NABA Belt home

Wilmington DE..

Alex Guerrero 12-0 put on a boxing clinic in focus, discipline and skills Friday evening at the Chase Center in Wilmington DE to bring home the NABA Title Belt. The belt was presented by the North American Boxing Association who sanctioned the 10 round Championship bout. The NABA is under the umbrella of the WBA(World Boxing Association) and covers Canada, Mexico and the US.

Guerrero’s opponent, tough Philadelphian Anthony Farrante was as tough and determined as expected but just could not find a solution to Guerrero movement and punishing jab. Out of the gate Guerrero established his quick jab and followed up with a straight right hand that buckled Farrante’s knees in the first round, but Farrante, ever the warrior, recovered and began hunting Guerrero down in the small 16x16 ft ring. Guerrero continued to move and take Farrantes power punching away from him while landing his own jab and powerful right hand. At times it appeared that Farrante had gotten his wish as Guerrero mixed it up on the inside but even those exchanges saw Farrante loosing to inside wars, with Guerrero landing hard body shots and short inside uppercuts.

Although Farrante appeared to be wearing down in the 5th he continued to look for an opening for his signature fight ending, right hand, it would never come.

Farrante’s face was showing the signs of defeat and both eyes started to close and Guerrero opened a large cut over Farrantes right eye. In the sixth round Guerrero saw the opening and followed a picture perfect jab with a devastating straight right hand that send Farrante to the canvas, body collapsing from the blow.

“ At first I was not happy to see such a small ring because it hinders the movement we had planed on, but Alex adjusted and used his athleticism in the confined space, but after the 5th round it actually became an advantage and made it easy for Alex when he started pressuring Farrante.

“ The knockdown happened in our corner, so I could seeTony’s eyes just roll back and go down hard, I was sure it was over when he tried to get up and could not get his to his feet, but this guy is so tough and he just fought his way to his feet and made the count just as the bell rang,. He staggered to his corner and came out in the 7th on guts alone but Alex continued to dominate. I told him do not get cute Tony can be dangerous even when he looks shot

The 10 round title fight was stopped in the corner at the end of the eighth round when Farrante’s corner stopped the fight. Personally I would have liked to seen it stopped at the knock down. Tony was hurt, tired and taking a lot of punishment, he was way behind on points and his only chance was a hail Mary KO but he was taking a lot of hard shots. He did have to show me or anyone else that he has heart, he proved all through this fight and many others as well, I just don’t like to see a fighter take any more punishment than necessary. We may be adversaries in the ring but as a comrades in the sport when all is said and done” Said Coach Hal Chernoff. “We were prepared for his style and had a good camp and a good tight corner so that gave Alex his best chance for good performance. Chernoff added.

The win will move Guerrero up significantly in the world ratings and help set the stage for World Title if Guerrero stays on the present course. Chernoff said he would love to bring that fight to Salisbury when the time comes and break new ground, by having a world title fight in our hometown with a home grown fighter.

“ I will take a little break, and get right back in the gym”. Said the new Champion. We don’t expect a wait for our next bout and need to continue to improve and stay in shape.” Added Guerrero. “ It’s a funny business and you have to be ready when the call comes, because sometimes you would like more time to prepare, so you have to stay in shape. I’m real lucky to have the people around me that helped me get here, my coach and my corner, but also people the public don’t see like my sponsor Pohanka of Salisbury that has helping me so much or businesses like Robinson's. Without people that believe in you it makes it very hard to move up even if you have the talent.

Champs Management did a good job of setting this up and putting on a great show. I hope we can work out the details to make the next move too. It was real nice show and I am just happy to that we had a good game plan. I am also glad no one got seriously hurt.

Guerrero will be riding in his hometown Christmas Parade on Dec 6th in Delmar.

Alex will be on hand for the Dec 12th Main St Boxing event, that include some Fireman vs Police bouts. Billed as Guns and Hoses /Festival of Fights, it is a way of bringing the community closer together and is very successful in other cities across the US. Call 410-430-6687 for tickets or go to any Pohanka Dealership, Back Street Grill, E.D. Supply, Burnett Tire Center, Delmarva Auto Glass, or Robinsons Clock.
