Georgetown, DE - The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a single vehicle crash north of Georgetown after the driver led troopers on a short pursuit.
The incident began around 1:00 a.m. this morning as a trooper observed a vehicle traveling southbound on DuPont Boulevard (US113) at a high rate of speed. The trooper was able to catch up to the SUV in the area of McColleys Chapel Road and upon activating the emergency equipment in the patrol car, the vehicle failed to stop and continued accelerating away at a high rate of speed. The 1997 Mercury Mountaineer turned westbound on Wilson Hill Road and as it was attempting to negotiate a sharp curve to the right, just east of State Forest Road, the vehicle exited the south side of the roadway and began rolling over multiple times before coming to a stop in a corn field.
The driver, who was later identified as Jerry N. Evans, 43 of Lincoln, was not properly restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He was airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation (Trooper 2) to Christiana Medical Center where he is admitted in serious condition.
Wilson Hill Road was closed for three and a half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into this incident. Alcohol and drugs are believed to be factors and charges are pending.
