The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. as John B. Burkett, 72 of Dover, was operating a 2000 International Fire Truck southbound on East Dennys Road in the area of Simms Woods Road. The engine truck, which was enroute to a fully involved barn fire located at 1876 East Dennys Road, was in the process of slowly passing another fire truck when the left side tires drove off the pavement and onto the soft shoulder causing the weight of the truck to shift and overturn into a ditch on its left side.
John Burkett was transported from the scene by EMS to Kent General Hospital where he was examined and released with no injuries.
Four firefighters on board the truck were uninjured in the incident.
The roadway was closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared and the truck was up-righted. No charges are expected.

Slowly passing another fire truck while en route to a fire? Now that's funny.
Shouldn't be driving a fire truck at 72 and shouldn't be passing another fire truck
Passing another fartruck?????
Racing to the fire?????
WOW!
Who won? Please tell the contestants' names!!!
Sounds like the one truck was stopped and the truck that turned over was going around him. Maybe the stopped truck was out of water and they needed the other truck for more water. If they would have been racing to the fire I doubt the state police would have included that they were slowly passing. Sounds like the road was just to narrow for them both. Im no fan of the FD but don't make mountains out of mole hills.
4:30 breakfast run! LOL.
They were passing the other fire truck because the other truck was sitting stopped in the roadway. Being a firefighter, I'm guessing the truck sitting stopped was either filling up with water, likely from a pond or a hydrant or was too big to turn in the driveway where the fire was located and was supplying water from where it was up to the fire. It was a tanker, and generally the tankers sit on the road and connect to a hose and supply water from the tanker up to the fire. Anyhow, the engine tried going past the tanker and the road was too narrow. I know, I've been down this road quite a few times. There is a ditch on the edge of the road, and the engine's left side tires left the roadway and slid down the ditch, and truck tipped over. It wasn't a high speed crash. I feel awful for the Leipsic Fire Company. This was their newest truck. I have no idea how badly damaged the truck is. The news showed some footage of the truck being hauled away by a tow truck, but they only showed the right side which the truck tipped over on the left side.
Mr. Burkett, you are hereby FIRED.
