Majority of Americans want a third party

Democrats and Republicans are held in such low esteem that for the second year in a row a majority of U.S. adults said a third political party is needed, according to a new Gallup poll.

Since 2007, the call for a third political party has never dipped below 46 percent. Fifty-eight percent now want a third party, down only two points from last year’s high of 60 percent.

Gallup started asking the question in 2003, the last time that a majority of Americans thought both parties were doing an adequate job. That figure has now dropped to 35 percent.

The desire for a new party is even between both parties: 46 percent of Republicans and 47 percent of Democrats. But it's stronger among nonpartisans: 71 percent of independents want a third political party.

I rather see a None of the Above choice on the ballot instead of a third party of which there are plenty.

That's all we need is another dysfunctional party. How about voting common citizens into office and each year voting a new person in. Can't do any worse than the mess we have now.

There were two perfectly good alternative choices last time around, but when it came time to cast a ballot, how many voted with their heartfelt choice, and how many decided if I do that, the R/D I don't want will win?

Yup.

Not good idea..better off dumping both for two new parties....both for less not more government... and reform the electoral college system

get money and corruption out of politics. take away ALL the perks of the office and then we'll see who Really want to serve our citizens in this country. lower salaries and eliminate pensions or at least reduce dramatically. never vote for someone who hasn't owned and operated a business or hasn't served in the military. period. no more lawyers, school teachers or professors. this is the elite and they are educated beyond their capacity to reason. they have no common sense. the dems and libs must go as well as the rino's.

The results are dependent on the questions asked. It is more likely the respondents wanted two DIFFERENT parties, not MORE parties.
