In a 5-2 vote, the Reno City Council today authorized laying off 35 firefighters despite pleas from the fire union and homeowners to preserve the jobs.
The layoffs became necessary after the city lost a federal grant that was to fund 50 firefighters next year. City staff found enough money to retain 15 of those jobs, largely by paying off a bond used to purchase city hall. Funds used to make those bond payments will now pay the salaries of those 15 positions.
But available city funds still fell short, meaning 35 firefighters will lose their jobs on July 1.

They bet on a federal grant and didn't get. Reno is in Nevada and Harry Reid is more interested in killing horses and cattle. But the democrats will vote for him again because of welfare.
The same exact thing is going to happen in Salisbury. There is no such thing as free money and eventually that free money has to run out. Stupid Democrats.
This is the same fire department and also the same thing the Salisbury Fire Department does.
Reno firefighter bills Reno for Mexican cruise
Anjeanette Damon
The city of Reno is spending thousands of dollars sending firefighters to emergency medical certification training at out-of-state tourist destinations despite the fact the same training is offered in Northern Nevada.
One Reno firefighter, for example, spent a week this month on a cruise of the Mexican Riviera, submitting $1,322 in travel and training expenses to the city for reimbursement. According to the paperwork he submitted for the expense, the emergency medical technician training sessions occurred while the ship was at sea, allowing the firefighter to "enjoy all of your port days" in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.
