Cardin Holds Hearing On Conowingo Dam

CONOWINGO, Md. (AP) -- Officials say concerns about the sediment-filtering capacity of a dam on the lower Susquehanna River in northeast Maryland must be addressed in the broader context of trying to improve water quality efforts throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Construction of the Conowingo Dam in the late 1920s created a detainment area for some of the sediments and nutrients flowing down the Susquehanna toward the bay.

But officials say the ability of the reservoir to hold additional sediment is reaching capacity, and heavy rain events sometimes send sediment and pollutants flowing through the dam toward the bay.

Well, it's about time. This da-n dam has been one of the MAJOR polluters of the Chesapeake Bay for MANY years and the powers that be have known this for a long time.

But what do they do...they blame everything on private property owners who happen to have a septic system and live more than 100 miles from the bay.

DOWN with the EPA and all the other tree hugging groups that go along with them.

I grew up 5 minutes away from the Dam. I can tell you for a fact...the pollution is coming from PA and NY. It is awful.
I don't think I would blame the dam for the pollution. I think it stops a tremendous amount from the bay.
