As warm weather approaches, the Ocean City Police Department is reminding citizens of the recent legislative changes prohibiting passengers from riding unrestrained in the beds of pick-up trucks on Ocean City roadways. In January, the Mayor and City Council voted this change into effect to enhance public safety and prevent serious injuries that could result from riding unrestrained in an unenclosed area of motor vehicles. A violation of this ordinance could result in a fine of up to $250.
Ocean City citizens are reminded that the new ordinance falls under the town code “Seat Belts” division and reads that “a person may not ride or allow another person to ride in the unenclosed area of a motor vehicle except in a seat and with a seat belt in use.”
“This is another step we are taking to make Ocean City roadways safer,” said Chief Ross Buzzuro. “In 2013, Ocean City experienced 504 reportable traffic collisions. If one collision involved a pickup truck that was full of unsecured passengers, it could be tragic. This new ordinance will prevent that.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seatbelts saved an estimated 12,174 lives nationwide in 2012. The NHTSA also says that seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle collisions.

This should apply to dogs too.
its sounds like a way to generate more revenue
Another bs law. Some of the best times we had as a kid was riding in the back of pickups. Government control, government control, government control - go to hell.
It sounds like a great way to keep people safe and to stop some from acting like wild animals in the back of a pickup.
Say What? Party On DUDE...my truck is too sexy and u cannot stop me...
Just another "Nanny State" nuisance regulation, protecting idiots from themselves.
Watch for HB 897-35 to be passed someday: The "Running With Scissors" ordinance.
Quote: riding unrestrained in the beds of pickup trucks on Ocean City roadways. Tell me again who paid for, laid and maintained the blacktop surface of ALL roadways in Worcester County, Maryland? It certainly wasn't Ocean City. The State of Maryland sets the speed limits, maintains the stoplights and dictates the laws to be followed on THEIR highways, NOT Ocean City. What's Maryland's laws on unrestrained riders in the beds of pickups? Sounds like a small town run by a few egotistical dictators, attempting to circumvent the established laws of Maryland. Lawsuits will be forthcoming, as they should.
Passengers who are NOT covered by Maryland laws, meaning the restrictions do NOT apply are: Quote: people 16 and older; people 15 and younger if the vehicle is traveling 25 mph or less; employees being transported to work sites or people engaged in farming operations; exceptions do not eliminate requirement to use child restraint or belts; inapplicable to pickup trucks with covered cargo areas
It's really about GREED. Mayor and council know full well that unsuspecting drivers and riders in pickups will have no clue until Ocean City steals more money from them. GREED is their motive, as always.
Many of the "guilty" either have or have friends who have ridden in helicopters, hanging on with one hand outside of an open door, going faster than possible for a pick up in Ocean City, wearing a hundred pounds of gear, flying over Afghan mountains to defend the greedy, money grabbers of Ocean City.
This needs to be the law of the land. It is stupid to be unrestrained in the bed of a truck, so many are hurt and killed when they do this. Hopefully the legislators will see this and how safe it makes OC, then copy it for the whole state.
I think it should be illegal to haul building materials in the back of pickup trucks since lumber can fall out, go through your car window and kill or maim someone. While we are at it ban the hauling of dirt and mulch because the wind takes some of the material away and causes silt to buildup in storm drains. And how about banning trash bags since they sometimes rip open and trash flies out, harming the environment. I could go on and on. Ban everything, screw it. Ban pickup trucks.
not a problem, just bolted 12 old schoolbus seats to my flatbed truck and got seatbelts to.anybody want to go for a ride
