BERLIN — The former poultry processing plant property in Berlin has become the topic of a lot of recent conversations, and the question is whether the property owner and the Town of Berlin would consider turning the 60-acre space into a park or recreational area.
Without making any guarantees, the Berlin Mayor and Council have indicated that the option is possible and a hard look will be taken at the unused site soon after the town’s budget is put to rest this spring.
Left empty for more than a decade, the old Tyson Foods plant property on Old Ocean City Blvd. has been an unproductive splotch on an otherwise booming Berlin. Over the years, numerous strategies for how to revitalize the site have been pitched to the town with no real progress made. Interest spiked last week, however, when a new development plan called “Tyson’s Park” began to make the rounds.

This is owned by a Town Councilperson. Just because he bought a white elephant, why do we the taxpayers get screwed on the deal? Use our money to buy it (I already know what they will say--we will get GRANTS!!--still tax dollars). Then we the taxpayer will maintain it which will no doubt need to hire more people. It will also take the property off of the tax base for both the town and county. Let it open as a private enterprise not a governmental agency.
That pond is Tyson's former sewage lagoon and was used for many years to dispose of process wastewater and chicken guts and feces. It's hard t tell what's at the bottom but I don't want to swim or fish in it.
I would never want to step foot on that property with all of the hazardous materials on and under the ground.
There is a reason no one has wanted that property for 15 years. Think about it.
"Tyson's Park?" That is too funny. Conjures up images of hazardous materials, chicken guts and feces.
and the property comes off the tax roles........think of what you're doing Berlin. THINK!!!!!
The tourists that come to Berlin will never know what was there before the park. The park isn't being built for the local it issn attraction to get more tourist and to keep them there for more than a few hour dining/shopping spree.
I agree Tyson's Park sounds bad. It's right up there with Perdue Stadium. Even if both weren't related to such a "fowl" industry, the names in of themselves are unpleasant sounding. Besides unless Tyson is footing the bill for the park why give them recognition.
agree with the naming--at this point it appears the taxpayers are footing the bill. As someone suggested earlier, let the current owner develop it into a park....not the town government. The town says they don't have any money so why would they even be talking about this? Any thoughts?
Yeah I have thoughts 12:24. Same thoughts as 4:59.
