ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor O’Malley issued the following statement in response to the announcement that Maryland Public Service Commissioner Kelly Speakes-Backman will serve as the Chairman of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, Inc.'s Board of Directors:
“I congratulate Commissioner Speakes-Backman on her election as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Inc. (RGGI). I am delighted to have someone with her breadth of knowledge and experience in energy, sustainability, renewable energy and environmental business strategies take up the helm at such a crucial time in RGGI’s development.
“Here in Maryland we've set one of the most aggressive goals in the country, committing to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020. We've made some progress, but there is still more work to do. Almost half of those reductions must come from the energy sector, and the market-based RGGI structure is critical to realizing our goal of creating a better, more sustainable future for our State.”
