Motorist Struck, Killed After Exiting Vehicle On Route 589

The Dispatch

Motorist Struck, Killed After Exiting Vehicle On Route 589
SHOWELL -- A 58-year-old man was killed last night on Route 589 when he was struck by a vehicle after exiting his running Suburban in the travel lanes.
On Friday night, at about 8:30 p.m., a motor vehicle collision was reported to have occurred in the area of Route 589 north of Showell School Road. Upon the arrival of troopers, it was determined a pedestrian was struck and suffered critical injuries.
The pedestrian, Aaron Bernard Simon, was taken by ground to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin where he was pronounced dead soon after arrival. The family has been notified.
Through the investigation, it was determined Simon was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban southbound along Route 589 north of Showell School Road when, for an unknown reason, he stopped the vehicle in the travel portion of the roadway. Simon then exited the vehicle and began to walk south in the northbound travel lane. There were no street lights in the area, but Simon left his vehicle running and the headlights on with the hazard lights activated.
Mark Edward Iacona was driving a 2007 Cadillac Escalade northbound on Route 589 when he came upon the stopped Chevrolet. Iacona said he had slowed and moved slightly to the right because he did not know why the Chevrolet was stopped and he wanted to give the vehicle more room. Subsequently, he did not notice the pedestrian and the impact occurred. Evidence suggests the pedestrian was in the travel portion of the roadway when he was struck and not on the shoulder. There was no evidence of driver impairment on the part of Iacona.
Maryland State Police troopers responded, and SHA was called to assist with traffic detail. On-scene assistance was provided by the Worcester County Sheriff's Department. The investigation continues.

Emergency flashing lights means move a lane over and yield --just as you are supposed to do for a Cop--or wrecker -

This report if the facts are as stated is negligent driving and possibly manslaughter --

That applies to emergency vehicles. The driver said he moved slightly to the right.

Common sense would dictate that you slow down, which he said he did. How much he slowed, it does not say. Not enough to avoid the victim obviously.

One doesn't walk in the travel portion of a roadway, especially at night.

I doubt any charges will be filed against the driver. The victim, however, may have charges, posthumously.

Uh. 748, he did move a lane over. That's where he got hit.
Read and comprehend.

This is sad and Mr. Iacona will have to live with this for the REST of his life - to me, that is punishment enough!!! We will keep you in our Prayers. Also, Friday night was extremely foggy in Wicomico Co. Was it foggy there?!

Know the whole story before we judge and also walk a mile in someone's shoes as well!!!

Showell - This report failed to mention the Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 4 was called and the firemen waited on scene for Trooper 4 to respond from Salisbury which takes an abnormal amount of time for the helicopter to prepare for the call, warm up and then get clearance to fly to the scene. This report fails to mention that this pedestrian was conscious, alive and breathing while laying on the ground and the firemen were waiting for Trooper 4. This report failed to mention that an Emergency Department at Atlantic General Hospital was just down the street while the firemen were waiting for Trooper 4 to respond from Salisbury. This report failed to mention this trauma patient was conscious and alert just prior to the helicopter landing on the ground at Showell Park. This report failed to mention that the patient was conscious and alert before going into Trauma Arrest. When the patient went into Trauma Arrest the fireman who was in command started screaming on the radio Trauma Arrest, Trauma Arrest. This report failed to mention that the patient was a trauma pedestrian patient who was laying on the ground when the ambulance arrived on scene. Anyone with any sense and the appropriate training and education would have known that this was a "LOAD AND GO" patient to the nearest hospital which was just down the street from them. This report failed to mention the helicopter Trooper 4 landed and the patient wasn't even transported to the hospital via Trooper 4. This report failed to mention that the Showell Ambulance transported the patient by ground. Guest what hospitatl was the patient transported to? If you guessed Atlantic General you are correct. Imagine that the ambulance transported the patient to the first hospital by ground which they should have in the first place. The report failed to mention that the Flight Medic from Trooper 4 rode in the ambulance to the hospital. This report failed to mention their was a possibility a negligence on the part of fire crew, ambulance crew, PARAMEDIC and command. "Command" transmitted a report to Trooper 4 that the patient had a "broken arm." Their negligence possibly contributed to the death of this patient. It should also be noted how much time the patient lied on the ground or in the back of the ambulance waiting for the helicopter Trooper 4 to pick him up for transfer when an Emergency Department with Doctors was just down the road from them. This is pure negligence on the part of all involved and they should be charged accordingly. Why did they think a helicopter was needed? Oh that's right it looks cool to have Trooper 4 respond and land to the scene. Well it landed and the wait may have killed the patient. This wait tapped into the crucial Golden Hour established by R. Adams Cowley(Namesake of Shock Trauma) which may have saved his life.

This is a call that should be reported to MIEMSS the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System for negligence on the part of all persons involved from the Showell Volunteer Fire Company.

This is a regular road-one lane for each direction-, not a highway so I don't think moving a lane over applies, does it?

First of all my heart goes out to the victim & to his family obviously this was a tragedy from the start. Second to you mr anonymous Obviously you are either a disgruntled member of a volunteer fire/ems dept. or a career paramedic to be lashing out at a departments handing of this particular call or a member of a another Department which in that case you are surely violating I'm sure a dept. policy of speaking out about a call possibly even violating a HIPPA law as well. Or you could be just some scanner firefighter want of be & you do nothing but listen to calls all day but my hunch you are a paramedic or EMT & switched your pager over to listen to said call. But either way honestly you really shouldn't be commenting on a on going investigation. Especially if you were not involved in the original call. if you were there you definitely shouldn't be violating your department policy especially without being PIO. Or chief of that department. If you weren't there & I'm sure you weren't let the professionals do their investigation that's what they get paid for.
