10 Ways To Make Your Computer Run Faster

Many people will be planning on upgrading their laptop or PC this Christmas, but here are 10 ways of avoiding a costly new purchase

1) Uninstall unused programs

New PCs come with a whole load of programs you will never use, and you probably don’t even know they exist.

Some programs even run background processes when you load your computer, even though you are not using them.

To remove all these pointless programs, open the Control Panel’s Programs and Features page, and have a trawl through the list of installed software. Uninstall those that you do not need, while being careful to leave programs your computer’s hardware needs (typically their publisher will be listed as the PC maker’s name or as Microsoft).

If you are still unsure about which programs to use, try a third-party called such as PC Decrapifier– it’s free for non-commercial use – which should tell you which programs you don’t want or need.

Some of this advice is good but there is also some advice that can cause you trouble. I have been working in PC repair for close to 20 years now so here are the items on the list that I think need clarification.

2. Auto deleting Temp files.

While this is not bad advice the reasoning giving is not very accurate. Basically files in the Temp folder will not slow your PC down. Files sitting on the hard drive will have zero impact on the performance of the PC unless the hard drive is full or has less than 4GB of space remaining.

People also are always told to delete cookies. Cookies themselves are not bad. Yes you can have bad cookies but they do serve a purpose. Cookies save any custom settings you may have on a favorite web page or your login information. If you delete all your cookies you may find that you will have to renter information on websites you visit on a regular basis. Having a good Anti-spyware program will take care of the bad cookies while leaving the ones you use alone.

3. Install a Solid State hard drive: Yes Solid state drives are great and very fast but you need to have a PC that is new enough to run it properly. Most PCs that are at least 7 years old will have the proper connection to install a Solid State drive but the Motherboard's BIOS may not be able to use it properly if your PC is not new enough. This can lead to severe system stability issues.

4. Hard drive space : Saying that your PC will slow down when your hard drive is 85% full is just wrong because there are so many hard drive sizes. Having 85% of a 1TB drive will still leave plenty of space for your PC to run properly. The general rule is that if you have less than 4GB of free space left you will start to notice some impact on the systems performance because the PC needs some free room to right temporary files.

7. Run a disc defrag: Never ever ever defrag a solid state hard drive. You will ruin the drive. Now defrag on a standard drive is fine but really since Windows Vista the PCs tend to defrag themselves when the PC is idle. Really its only an issue with Windows XP and since its going end of life in April 2014 most people should be moving away from that OS for security reasons.

9. Give your computer a Static IP: Ok first off if you own a laptop and assign a static IP to it you will find that many times you can't connect to the internet when you use it away from home. Static IP is only good if you never take your PC away from the house and also if you have more than one device on the network.

Having a Static IP really doesn't improve the performance of your PC nor does it help much online. It's basically a way to manage devices on networks that have many systems. For a home network dynamic IP is fine.

10. Hoovering out Dust : Using a vacuum on a PC get be a bit risky due to static. While its not a high risk it can cause issues. Its best to use a can of air and clean out the heat sinks and fans. Also keep your vents free of dust as well.

11:03am - you've obviously never used PC Decrapifier, and are basing your warning on the name and assuming it's another "smoke and mirrors cleanup utility"

PC Decrapifier doesn't get installed, it's just a program that runs. (doesn't install any registry entries, or in program groups, etc).

It's just a program that lists all of the programs in your computer and allows you to check boxes to uninstall the programs you check.

It actually works very well and is not risky at all.
