Local Group Wants State To Regulate Labs

A Frederick group wants the state to require registration or licensing of laboratories that work with potentially dangerous agents as a way to rein in the industry and protect public health.

Beth Willis, co-chairwoman of the Containment Laboratory Community Advisory Committee, filed a document Tuesday with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene urging regulation of labs in which workers handle potentially lethal agents and wear protective equipment in secure spaces to thwart breaches.

The state should require notification of any laboratory-acquired infections in workers, as well as require notification if the lab closes or moves, the two-page CLCAC document states, adding that such steps are small and appropriate.

Everything needs to be regulated, right down to the shoelace factory. Yeah, that will bring down costs and keep us safe!
