I believe he was warning us about Barak Obama and his mentors, all of which are Communists.
He was warning us to take responsibility and action for and when Liberties and Trust are compromised. Soft tyranny, if not checked, as fostered by radical egalitarianism be it of a single despot or an elected assembly and its administrative state will lead us as a country to either "servitude or freedom, to knowledge or barbarism, to prosperity or wretchedness."
