REPORT: HOMESCHOOLING GROWING SEVEN TIMES FASTER THAN PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLLMENT

As dissatisfaction with the U.S. public school system grows, apparently so has the appeal of homeschooling. Educational researchers, in fact, are expecting a surge in the number of students educated at home by their parents over the next ten years, as more parents reject public schools.

A recent report in Education News states that, since 1999, the number of children who are homeschooled has increased by 75%. Though homeschooled children represent only 4% of all school-age children nationwide, the number of children whose parents choose to educate them at home rather than a traditional academic setting is growing seven times faster than the number of children enrolling in grades K-12 every year.

As homeschooling has become increasingly popular, common myths that have long been associated with the practice of homeschooling have been debunked.

Unfortunately, we still have to pay taxes to support the union-leech public school system.

Because the education system is liberal jerks. Their intent is to twist our kids minds to believe in their ideals. THe Teachers are terrible, most of them and its nothing more than a joke.

Home schoolers learn more, learn REAL history, and get to Pray...

Schools are a joke, I hope they go broke. Love to see teachers work a real job, they think they have it hard... Work a real job, shift work. Off three months a year, they get a day off at drop of hat.

granddaughter finished homeschool at age 16, just completed 1st year of college(age 17) with all A's, excellent social life, wonderful morals, no personal hang-ups about styles and trendy clothes...can't say enough good things about homeschooling...and now the colleges and the rest of the world are recognizing this fact. All this while the parents still pay taxes for public schools.

As long as they mingle to improve their people skills.Public schools tend to produce extroverts, while home schooling tends to produce introverts. If the students who are home schooled participate in all of the available sports programs and social events all will work out just fine. It's when they tend to be standoffish and are allowed to be that way uncontested that the problem arises.

When liberal thinking self servers get inside the political establishment they force queer rights, heavy taxation, unwanted gun laws down the throats of all conservative Americans and the word "conservative" does not necessarily mean Republicans, because they're consumed with pandering to big money, big greedy businesses, both foreign and domestic, foreign powers, and could really give a damn about middle class working Americans. Until the middle class (you and I) finally take a stand, against the corrupt electoral voting process, against any and all big block prepaid-offs to politicians masked as campaign contributions, against the ever corrupting lobbies in Washington D.C. things will not only continue as you see them today, but will get worse. All of us know what it will take for change to happen. Possibly July 4th in D.C. will be the turning point? You can be certain of this on that day, legal gun owners will abide by the laws of our country, but liberals have a consuming agenda and they've proven over and over, that they have zero limitations in achieving their goals, which is to remove any and all firearms from Americans. Expect a liberal to start the disruption, under the guise of a legit gun owner protester, then like usual, the liberal Democratic liars will be on TV blaming everyone else except one of their own. Their pattern of constant deceit is well established, they're corrupt to their rotten core. They are traitors!,... to the Constitution of the United States of America and to it's legal inhabitants. It's three weeks away, expect the worst, and say a prayer for our men and women who will be supporting our constitution and our freedoms that day.

i'm now 66. we placed our daughter now 47 in "Christian school" when she was in 3rd grade. actually removed her from beaver run because the "experiment" for that season of time was open classrooms and I saw an extreme number of errors in the textbooks to include history timelines and facts. I read additional textbooks in 4th, 5th and 6th grades to find this as well.
bottom line; government schools were offering a substandard education and we only had one opportunity to make it right; we didn't get a "rerun".
we were "lower" middle-class at the time and really couldn't afford to do this, but we knew we had to chose this path. we sacrificed and the results were wonderful.
yes; we were double taxed all those years because we had to pay for tuition and continue paying taxes for failing schools. we did the same thing for our 2 grandsons and we're still grateful.
government schools are the armpit of education and no one should subject their children to this failing system. you now have the choice of homeschooling so there's really no excuse, except you may not want to sacrifice materially. there are ways to make it happen.

I disagree 8:47. Homeschooling is a network which just doesn't involve sports and other extracurricular activities.
You are either an introvert or extrovert by nature and a main problem with public schools is they demand a child change an extroverted personality and if the child doesn't change they are labeled.

9:34-What about your education level? Seriously,I read your comment and question if you are even qualified to judge the public school system.I find your negativity astounding.Public or private,or home schooling is truly what any given student makes of it.

I bet you live in a glass house.

Regarding socialization: Seriously think about what kind of socialization a homeschool kid is missing: bullying, drugs, fighting, cops in school, gangs, pressure to dress like hoochy mamas and gangstas, teachers who really do not want to be there and more! Most homeschoolers belong to a co-op that meet weekly for class, fun, field trips, etc. The kids are in many different types of sports and activities such as dance, baseball, karate, the list is endless. Of course you need to be able to afford to stay at home, be dedicated to your kid's education. Its not for everyone because it takes very enthusiastic parents who work together to instill the love of learning into the child.

10:10 Not true. My children have been in both public and private schools. My teen is reading the same books in 11th grade public school as she did in 7th grade private. In middle school she was writing papers. In high school she brings home work sheets. The only real home work she has is in AP classes. What is offered to her in public school is no way near the same level as private school. Also, since at public school she has witnessed many terrible fights, cursing and disrespect to teachers and has had drug sniffing dogs in the classroom. Not good at all.

10:10-Your ignorance is astounding. Education is NOT truly what every given student makes of it! It takes dedication by not only the child, but the parents and the teachers and the community to see that the school systems are up to par and providing quality education. A child cannot learn when a school due to disruptive students is in chaos.
The public school systems offer a substandard education as well as the public universities. Years of lowering the standards have contributed to this and if you can't see it then you need to get out and see how the real world works or you can continue to be fooled into thinking they are something they are far from.

10:10's probably a public school teacher. The main prerequisite for acceptance into teaching program is a propensity to be brainwashed by propaganda.
99:9% of these teachers truly believe that MD has #1 schools-to dumb themselves to see what's really behind these test scores.
BTW-I was in the presence of a teacher the other day and 2 times within minutes used improper English. Used "drug" instead of dragged and used "went" inappropriately when gone should have been used. I consider this person a friend but when I think she is teaching children I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

This "socialization" crap is very Orwellian. They are attempting to make all children into identical robots. Everyone is born with different personality traits and it only upsets the psyche when children are told they are different and their particular personality is not acceptable.
Makes money for the drug companies though.

9:24, how old are you, where were you educated and what degree did you earn?
I am qualified to judge government schools and anything else that affects my family, friends and society as a whole. someone better start judging the way we educate our children quickly. we don't have much time. we've lost a generation or more due to this failing, substandard, government, socialist brainwashing system.
your challenge to me shows your ignorance and foolishness.
I've said this for the past 40 years. get your children and grandchildren out of the public aka government schools as fast as possible. give them a fighting chance to thrive, bloom and be successful in whatever they choose to do.

A lot of the previous comments were written by those who did not complete formal schooling. That may have been unavoidable for some reason or maybe just a complete dislike of being in school. That in turn ignited a desire to put the pressure on their children to do well in school to make up for what they lacked (sorely I might add judging by the comments). The first sign of a complete lack of education is anger, rage, and being easily offended as you all are.Don't try to catch up on everything you missed in school by writing a scathing comment. It's too late. You missed the boat.

there is no 924 but if you mean 934 his age in the very first words in his post.

if you are truly qualified to judge public schools, we can see you are part of the problem as well.

unless you merely think you are qualified.

you try to put on airs of being well educated, but resort to the same low brow tactics of others on here that have no real points or arguments.

a 6 year old can name call, insult and be mean. congratulations.

but you make excellent points for people to pull their kids out of public schools and home school them.

I would bet they are better educated than they would be in public schools and don't have to worry about offending the kid sitting next to them or their parents over some PC crap.

I see none of what you've stated 10:10am and am suspect of your reasons. My guess would be anti-christian or pro public schools i.e. teacher/administrator. His accounting sounds sane and rational. Why would anyone want to willingly throw their children in with a bunch of illiterate mutts, with mutt parents as their guiding force in life. I don't buy your post and think he's right!

Your post 12:45pm defines you. 1:46pm below says it best. If you're a teacher the kids are screwed! Your lack of comprehension coupled with your nonsensical articulation gives you a failing/minus grade of F

"The first sign of a complete lack of education is anger, rage, and being easily offended as you all are"

Oh please 1:32. What orifice did you pull that phrase out of?
You are the one who is offended when faced with opinions you don't like nor agree. As far as anger showing a lack of education?--- nothing could be more nonsensical than that statement. The saying "ignorance is bliss" comes to mind.
Only the ignorance are content with the status quo and do not want to take the effort it takes (which includes getting angry) to change things for the better. So stop falling for the "angry lack of education" propaganda. Intelligent people do get angry when they see an injustice. They just don't sit back and follow along blindly like a braindead zombie.

Home schooling is all about treating your children as your property that you can control.

With teachers like Jim Ireton as role models, teaching to the test instead of teaching to think and learn...I am glad my children are out of the wilco micro school system.

Anonymous said...

8:47, I know of no data to support that. In fact 2 of my children were homeschooled and they are the more outgoing ones.

parents are totally responsible for their children's education. not your neighbor, relatives, and certainly not the government.
take your responsibility seriously. you only get to go through this "exercise" one time; no redo's.
read the history of education in America to get a true picture. government schools to include unions have truly destroyed this nation and certainly millions of our children and their future. the majority of our under 40's really are clueless about the history of this great nation. they've been lied to and deceived by people and institutions they were subjected to. many parents were slow to see the truth and just couldn't or wouldn't move fast enough.
hopefully this ship can be turned around and truth will prevail. never give up.

Wow! Until 642 showed up I was astounded at the upper level of grammar, spelling, and sentence structure of the commenters here! Truly an educated bunch, rarely seen consistently on so many comments.

Then, we have one jump in that doesn't seem to know to capitalize the first word of a sentence... Dang!

good grief 8:22; are you nuts??? most people who write on the inet don't use caps for anything. how long have you been using the inet and commenting? maybe you just weren't aware or had taken notice. it has nothing to do with caps and sometimes punctuation and everything to do with making it short, concise without losing meaning.

Public school systems have become politicized is the main problem. Test scores are jerry rigged, incidences of disruption and violence are downgraded as to disguise the utter holy mess a lot of schools truly are in. This is done so politicians have a platform to brag upon-great school system in their districts/improving schools. Admins and principals are hired solely on their willingness to perpetuate these myths and the teachers themselves for the most part have been brainwashed into thinking all is well.
