ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland House of Delegates has changed a budget bill to make up to $300,000 available to help a farm family pay its legal bills after it was sued for alleged pollution.
The amendment was accepted Wednesday.
Delegate Norman Conway, D-Wicomico, says the Hudson family was put under tremendous stress that should have ended with a decision by the Maryland Department of Environment. He says court battles carried the family almost to the brink of losing everything.

Great job Norm!
Every once in a while - one comes out the way it should.....
Why aren't the funds coming out of the budgets/operating funds of the UMD Law Environmental Law Clinic and the Waterkeeper Alliance???
So the taxpayers get to pay twice and Norm (Mr. Nutria) gets a pat on the back???
No it is not a "great job" 10:21. As 10:40 said this should not be funded by tax payers. Tax payers are already subsidizing enough of the chicken growing/ processing operations.
Don't agree taxpayers should be on the hook for this!
I also agree with 10:40. Tax payers are stuck again by Conway. There should be a counter-suit against the U. of Md. and the Waterkeepers Alliance.
Norm does all he can to hurt all the farmers in the area (supporting the septic bill, for instance) and then he turns around and wants to spend taxpayer money to help one farmer. He's just doing this to cover his backside when he runs for re-election. He'll point to this one action as showing he's "pro-farmer" and hope people don't look into his real record.
This bill is absurd and an affront to Maryland taxpayers.
i being a farmer myself i agree . we shouldnt be paying for prosicution and defense. theres been funds raised to cover hudsons expenses.hudson wasnt 100 % not guilty
Well, the UM Law Environmental Clinic is at it again for their buddies, Cathy Phillips, Waterkeepers, and other left winger crazies. Now they have received through the Freedom of Information act nutrient management plans from MDE. Norm, buddy, maybe you should put lots more tax dollars in the legal fund to help pay for all of the suits that are on the way.
Obviously, the U/M and Waterkeepers have excellent funding in their legal department. Obviously, they lost their prosecution in this case. Obviously, they are liable for paying legal fees of the dominant party. Obviously, they are now blaming me, the taxpayer for their mistake. They need to pay the million dollars out of their next x years' funding and quit new lawsuits until they've saved up enough money to prosecute the next innocent victim.
Period.
Did I miss anything here?
