SALISBURY-OCEAN CITY: WICOMICO REGIONAL AIRPORT SETS 2012 RECORDS FOR PASSENGER TRAFFIC AND MILITARY AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS

Salisbury, MD – Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt is pleased to announce that the Salisbury-Ocean City: Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY) established two new records during 2012.

Wicomico County based Piedmont Airlines set a new, all-time annual airline passenger record for a total of 150,086 passenger movements through the airport in 2011. The previous record of 143,736 passengers was established in 2011.

In addition, Midwest Air traffic Control Services recorded a new all-time annual number of 13,520 Military aircraft operations during 2012. Overall, the combined numbers of aircraft operations (air carrier, air taxi, general aviation and military) recorded in 2012 totaled 45,625 aircraft operations. The combined numbers of 54,507 annual aircraft operations recorded in 2002 remains the airport’s record. SBY Airport’s proximity to numerous US Air Force and US Navy air bases results in a higher volume of military aircraft operations.

Question. 13,520 military aircraft operations? For what and by who's approval? I'll not get an answer on this one will I Rick. Maybe Mr. Ryan will give us an answer.

I see navy birds taking off and landing there all of the time!

Let's see what happens once American airlines takes over US Airways. My bet is that the current numbers reflect the low fares that USAir has in place. If they go up, usage will go down.

Actually it's US Airways taking over bankrupt American Airlines, and adopting American's name. CEO of US Airways will remain in control of the combined company.

6:47. by the US Navy's approval. The Navy originally built the airport runways etc and has perpetual rights to use them for training flights

I remember when the airport had two airlines here. why isn't usair paying landing rights? they pay them every where else. They already got the hangars for a song. might as well pay something. You and I do when we park there. figures lie and liars figure!
Ryans a joke! just like pollitt!
lies all lies!

8:16 You are correct. The Navy did build the original runways because of WW2. Who built the modern runways and updates of today? Who paid for the runway extensions that were just completed? An answer is to these questions is expected.

9:54. Those improvements were funded in two ways. The majority of funds came from FAA grants. The balance came from passenger fees like parking charges none if the funding came from county revenue. I hope that clarifies

Fantastic news Rick P! So why does it cost $300 to fly from Sal to Phil, when you can drive it in 3 hrs? Folks drive to Balt or Philly in 2.5 hrs, stay at fast park for $8 p day, and know that you flight will leave on time!

I can verify that the govt uses the airport. I live in the area and some days the windows in my house rattle from the "touch & go" activities. The commercial flights manage to minimize the noise & vibrations, the military does NOT...

9:28 And I stopped flying out of Salisbury because US Air would keep cancelling the flight from Philly back to SBY. I got a feeling, with the Obama economy going in the toilet, I don't think we will see the private passenger numbers going up here locally.

the county has no control over flight schedules or costs if flights. complain to US Air.
