Drives Against Gas Taxes Start Running On Empty

A backlog of proposed road projects and repairs to aging highways, bridges and transit systems has leaders in Maryland and Virginia eyeing the perennially unpopular proposal of raising their states’ gas taxes to generate revenue in what has become a national challenge for states to find funds for transportation fixes.

In Virginia, where efforts to relieve congestion in the D.C. suburbs are quickly overtaken by the demands of a growing and car-dependent population, officials say the cost of massive road construction is becoming unmanageable for the public sector. In Maryland, budget analysts say the state could run out of money for new projects by 2018, while transportation officials warn that crumbling infrastructure has reached epidemic levels and that state lawmakers must act soon or face the consequences.

“There’s going to be a push by a lot of people to do something in the upcoming [General Assembly] session,” said Gus Bauman, a lawyer who served as chairman of a Maryland commission last year that made yet-unheeded recommendations to raise transportation funds. “What’s it going to take? A bridge falling into a river here before they actually take this seriously?”

I thought Obama promised to rebuild America's infrastructure with stimulus money.

Just paid $3.199/gal in Chesapeake,VA for gas - 0.20 less than Salisbury; The roads down there are better than here, probably because they use the tax money for roads not entitlement projects.

The state of Maryland raids the highway user fund every year to balance the budget! This fund is paid for by gas tax revenue and is supposed to be sent back to the counties and municipalities where it is collected specifically for infrastructure projects!!! But you people continue to put Norm Conway back in office because he "has a powerful position". Yet he does nothing for us and worse, is in favor of raiding this fund. So thank Norm Conway and his supporters for your terrible roads.

The one fastest way to a robust economy would be to get gas down to 1.50 a gallon and the economy would take off!

Using the gas tax to balance the budget, which he hasn't done either, is crap. They need to look at their programs and start cutting, let the locals have the road taxes they so sorely need to fix their roads and get their budgets under control. Because the idiot governor has been so irresponsible he has thrown county gov'ts in a downward spiral.

7:46 I wouldn't let Pollitt off the hook as he supports Norm 100%! Rick also never met a tax dollar he couldn't spend.
