Two Deli's Close On The Downtown Plaza

Both Deli 111 and Anthony's have closed their doors for good. Anthony's space is available, (turn key) immediately, if anyone is interested.

I'm collecting unemployment, and as I have said before, it seems that for every business that opens, two shut down.

These businesss closed at the right time too, you don't have to own an eatery in downtown Salisbury to know that business declines when Ocean City starts rocking.

Joe:

Now's the time for you to open that Nathan's beanie-weenie business at the old synagogue -- everything would be kosher, to be sure. (except the owner/operator).

I never wnt to deli 111 because the advertised on a hate blog.

Add The South End Grill to the list of eatery casualties. Tough location for some reason. It was a Sambo's, Season's, Denny's, an excellent Chinese restaurant, the Lighthouse II and then South End in the space of 30 years.

I remember, as a teenager, how retail stores drove the activity in downtown Salisbury. I also know the scores of studies and consultants and money that have been wasted over the years.

The architecture lends itself to "upscale" services and retail. I'm not very smart, but I have a lot of common sense and here's what I'd do:

1. Get rid of the plaza.
2. Replace Main Street and make it go one way going East.
3. Offer a 3 year tax moratorium to any new business.
4. Offer a 15% discount to all College students.
5. Have free parking for anyone who has a receipt of $5.00 or more.
6. Make sure the South side of the new Main Street has free diagonal parking (the side WMDT is on).
7. Get rid of the Oblisk. Put it on the Civic Center's property
8. Have foot police patrols constantly plus bikes and horse patrols.
9. Get a regional anchor store like Peebles.
10. Return the Christmas Parade to downtown
11. Develop weekly events like Berlin does.

Hey 1:25 Will you please use a dictionary before you write on here!!

I also take it, you didn't get a good grade in writing or spelling class?!

Downtown is dead. It is not convenient for anyone and that is why it is empty. Everything seems to be a hassle to even get there let alone find a parking spot and walk.

I thought the second deli was Mike's Downtown Deli? Not Anthony's.

Until this silly city does all of the above like 1:37 suggested, whatever goes downtown is not going to make it. Why does the city not get it??? Ireton, city council are you listening????

I'm 50 years old and remember going to penneys, the 5&10, and Benjamins. I loved when the Christmas parades were downtown. It would be nice to bring back downtown Salisbury.

And still we see more retail construction. There is no need to go downtown for anything but your lawyer. We live in a retail disaster area. Every road leading into Salisbury has mulitple retail stores. What is going up behind the Wine Rack?

Never stepped foot in either one

The downtown needs an anchor. I have seen in some cities parking on one side of the street only. I like the comment of one way traffic and free parking. As it stands, paying for parking at Market Street is aggravating. It's like the city doesn't realize that they benefit from the sales tax of people dining and shopping there.

It's refreshing to see so many good ideas in this format. I wonder if the mayor and councilmen read this...

I'm actually new to reading news at the site.

I have said this once on this blog and will say it one last time, the responsible people for the decline of downtown were the ones that bought the Wicomico Hotel and turned it into offices! Period!. When the Ramada Inn was built across from the hospital, the city should have worked a deal with the Ramada or some other hotel chain to come in and renovate the old hotel instead! It would have brought people to that area more to shop and kept it a viable property. The tenants there now, work, go home and spend their money elsewhere. That is it in plain facts. IF, the old hotel had been renovated, there would be a nice small drug store in the area, gift shops and hopefully a spa and salon to attract the people to spend their money in that area while in Salisbury. Soon other specialty shops would have followed. It is close enough to the hospital that it is not a burden to get there or small buses could do shuttle like at Hopkins. Our current Ramada needs to be "torn down" and rebuilt. They keep trying to upgrade, but from what I hear, it is not so great. Issues with plumbing, water, small rooms! It does not fill the needs of people staying and attending events at the Civic Center. We need a better hotel in Salisbury and for my money, I would put it downtown!!! That is THE ONLY WAY you will ever get the heartbeat of downtown JUMP STARTED.

Need to get SU to build downtown and get the young good looking girls running around and the rest will follow!
