Getting By: Out Of Food, Out Of Options

One local family's story illuminates how food stamp use has tripled in county

He was a salesman accustomed to making $100,000 a year and she was a stay-at-home mom whose primary responsibility was caring for two pre-teen children.

They never expected to need help putting food on the table.

But Tuesday, in a small consultation room at the Department of Social Services building in Annapolis, the south county couple applied for food stamps.

They agreed to tell The Capital their story on condition of anonymity - they don't want the children to know the extent of their financial difficulties. Editors agreed to call them John and Alice Smith.

The Smiths said applying for public assistance last week was one of the hardest things they've ever done.

"I told no one we were coming here," Alice Smith said.

"I don't know what I am applying for. All I can tell you is neither of us have a job and there is zero income coming into the house," she said when senior caseworker Jeffrey Brown asked how he could help them.

I can't help to wonder if the Smiths really eliminated everything extra they could before applying for fs.
I see it here(Sby) often...you use your Independence card for food, but somehow you can justify cable tv, cell phones etc.

In my own neighborhood, there are families on fs, who have made no secret of it and still their kids are in sports, dance, have all the latest gadgets and so on.

I am not saying everyone is like this, but it really takes a lot for me to feel sorry for people these days.

They loser are leeched on this great country of ours. Why are my HARD EARNED DOLLARS going to subsidize these gimmie-crats?

Put em out of their misery and help the rest of us who know how to keep a job.

Thanks Barry!

955 if you think that unemployment is a partisan issue, you are a fool. Glad you are simply typing on a blog, not pulling any strings of power.

8:59 "kids are in sports, dance"
No way! I mean those kids should be out just running the streets and learning how to sell drugs, not doing something productive.

I have several friends who are out of work. It was not their choice to not be working, their companies either laid them off or closed their doors.
In addition, MOST of them are REPUBLICANS!
So I really wish you'd stop your daily spouting on multiple posts where all you do is bash Democrats.
It's really gotten old!
