Dover -- Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC) Executive Director Stephen Kingsberry today announced that DTC and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) have received a $4.5 million grant from the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA). With the help of Delaware's Congressional delegation, the project grant was selected on a competitive basis through the FY 2011 State of Good Repair Program.
The grant funds will be used for a variety of projects, including bus shelter glass replacements, bus stop accessibility improvements, fuel tank replacement, paving upgrades at the Mid-County Facility in Odessa, and upgrades to the Wilmington Administration Center.
DTC Executive Director Stephen Kingsberry said, "We are very pleased to be a grant recipient and we will use the $4.5 million for a variety of projects. This grant will go a long way in our efforts to provide even better public transit services to our customers."
Delaware's Congressional Delegation is also pleased to have these funds coming to DTC and DelDOT.
"This grant from the Federal Transit Administration will help improve Delaware's public transportation facilities for both passengers and the employees who keep it moving each day," said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del). "Keeping Delaware's public transportation buses and buildings safe, reliable, and accessible is important for the riders who depend on this service."
"As a state on the move, we need to continue to make critical investments in public transit so that Delaware's infrastructure can support a growing state and regional economy," said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del). "This grant will go a long way in supporting public transit enhancements in Delaware. A great many Delawareans depend on public transportation to get to their jobs, grocery stores and shopping malls, so we must continue to keep Delaware's public transportation options accessible, safe and dependable. Public transportation also means fewer vehicles on our roads, fewer traffic jams in our commutes, and fewer harmful emissions pumped into our air."
"We must continue to make investments that enhance the state's transportation and infrastructure," said Congressman John Carney (D-Del). "Delawareans all across the state depend on safe, reliable public transit, and this funding will allow the system to run more effectively. I look forward to the improvements that DelDOT will now be able to offer to its customers."
