General Dynamics To Close Aberdeen, Md. Office

Defense contractor General Dynamics Corp. said Monday that it plans to close an Aberdeen, Md. office this summer and layoff as many as 52 employees.

The defense contractor said that its contract to provide information technology trainers to an Army school at the Aberdeen Proving Ground is ending as a result of the nationwide base realignment and closure effort. The Aberdeen base is expanding overall as a result of realignment, but some military operations are moving elsewhere.

The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation said it was notified by the company that the shutdown of the information-technology operation would begin July 15 and end by Sept. 15.

General Dynamics spokesman Mark Meudt said the total number of layoffs could be smaller because the company is trying to find new jobs for the employees.

The company, based in Falls Church, Va., has about 90,000 employees worldwide.
