Sponsor of Illegal Immigrant Bill Says Repeal Could Cost Millions

The lead sponsor who objects to efforts to overturn his bill granting in-state college tuition to illegal immigrants said referendum efforts by opponents could cost the state millions and the drive is being funded by outside Tea Party interests.

“It costs the state a lot of money, and these guys are supposed to be fiscally conservative?”  Sen. Victor Ramirez, D-Prince Georges, said last Friday. “We’re going to spend millions of dollars potentially for a referendum.  It’s going to be more expensive to run the referendum than it is to fund the policy.”

“It’s definitely being driven by the Tea Party, not locally, but nationally,” Ramirez said.  “It’s people from the outside trying to tell Maryland what policy they should pass.”

Officials say cost is minimal

But state officials say the cost of putting the issue on the ballot is fairly minimal, and some organizers say there is little evidence of out-of-state funding for the petition drive.

"It will cost more to overturn this stupid bill than to fund college education for illegal immiggants" what planet is this moron from? They shouldn't even spent the money to debate and pass this stupid legislation in the 1st place!!

Amen to 8:26. Is there anyone out there stupid enough to believe that it will cost more to put this on a referendum than it will to implement? These professional liars insult our intelligence when they say absurd things like this and expect us to believe it just because they say so. How much has this idiot already cost us just to bring up this bill and do what was necessary to get it through? I find it unbeleivable that we elect the dumbest among us to represent us. Oh yea, it's PG county. That's Maryland's liberal utopia, so I'm sure he's a mental giant to his people.

837-As a level headed guy living(for the time being) in PG County, I couldn't agree anymore with your assessment. It's absolutely rediculous what is coming out of this reps mouth. How are we, or anyone with any level of intelligence, supposed to believe that a referendum will cost more than it is for this bill to be legal? The reason they don't want the referendum is simple, they know they will lose. I've talked to many of my neighbors, it's near lockstep agreement that this bill should never become law, and it's a slap in the face of any legal citizen. I hope it comes to referendum, then the will of the people, not of bought politicians, will be the deciding force.

We are pissing away money everywhere else. What difference does it make. I say REPEAL REPEAL REPEAL. They will just add another tax somewhere to pay for it any way. That would be a tax worth paying.
