Carper Wants To Help USPS

Delaware Senator Tom Carper has reintroduced a bill to help the U.S. Postal Service back to solvency. The bill would grant USPS more flexibility over its mail delivery schedule. And it would allow reductions in payments to the employee retirement pension funds. The Postal Service reported losses of $2.6 billion for the first six months of the current fiscal year. It expects to lose $8 billion for the year unless it can make changes. Managers want to end Saturday mail delivery. And they say they are forced by law to over-fund the retirement system.

Shouldn't that read "Former Delaware Senator"?
Why is he so gung ho on fixing this problem now?
Where was he when we needed him?

Shut it down we have private companies who can do it more efficiently and won't cost tax payers a dime.

He is still our Senator. Unfortunately. He can't fix something that can't be fixed. Stopping Saturday mail may save a few dollars but not the loses they are experiencing. The government has now idea how to compete in the business part of society. The only way they could compete with UPS or FED-EX is to shut them down so the USPS would become the only carrier of mail. But I doubt it hen too.

Our gov't shouldn't be in the business of enforcing a monopoly on home couriers. Open the market up, allow for competitive bidding between SOLVENT entities. Many countries in Europe are doing away with centralized postal systems, since private companies can do a much more efficient job at a lower rate. Why continue the failed policy of a gov't enforced monopoly? btw, the current postmaster general estimates over the next decade the usps will lose upwards of 235 billion dollars.

Get rid of the Federal Union and all will be fixed

Why don't we just retrain them to make buggy whips and vhs tapes? All of which are just as useless!
it's just another government jobs program, kinda like welfare for the lazy, just show up. Hell my mail carrier can't even get the mail in the right box!

The USPS model is simply no longer viable. There was a time when MOST residences had a delivery of First Class mail daily and adding reduced rate 2nd class (junk) mail was incremental revenue with little added cost. Now that First Class volume is down, 2nd class deliveries often become the only delivery at a price far less than First Class. If USPS is losing money delivering this Junk Mail, then delivering more of it will cause them to lose more money. Further, UPS is paying USPS to deliver small packages that UPS is getting paid for. UPS makes money but USPS loses more. If anyone thinks shifting to parcel deliveries like UPS might be a good idea, think again. The USPS delivery fleet can't handle the bulk that the big brown UPS trucks can so they would need to invest money they don't have in order to retool.

The USPS has invested over a Billion dollars in robotic sorting capability. It works well. It's everything else that's broken including a lot of empty Post Office buildings. The business of delivering physical media that the USPS was originally intended to do can only be successful as a hybrid of Government and private delivery organizations. The USPS will always loose money until they recognize this.

11:15 the post office does not receive one cent of tax revenue, their revenue is 100% from stamps and services

229-The USPS is nearing their federal borrowing limit, over 14 billion has gone to the usps in recent years that hasn't been paid back to the taxpayers. That "100% from stamps and services" hasn't covered the light bill in sometime now. 96 Million is annually budgeted from Congress for the "Postal Service Fund" as well. Where does that $$$ come from? The toothfairy?
