A Letter To The Editor

COMEGYS & SMITH HAVE GOT TO GO AND BODA DEFEATED IN SALISBURY THIS YEAR!

This latest meeting of the Salisbury City Council made clear, once again, that Gary Comegys and Louise Smith must be defeated if they seek reelection this year – and that Terry Cohen deserves to be reelected, Thanks to her vote and that of Ms. Campbell, the "three stooges" (Shields, Smith & Comegys) were unable to approve spending City funds to install sidewalks in the Harbor Pointe subdivision on Pemberton Drive. A supermajority (4/5ths) vote is needed to amend the City’s budget to appropriate the funds.

Her position may have soured Ms. Cohen with the Harbor Point crowd, but it shows in spades that she is dedicated to doing what is prudent, not simply what is politically expedient – and that Comegys and Smith are buffoons or political hacks (or both).

But the outcome was not as good for the public interest in the matter involving the former site of "Linens of the Weeks" (and, earlier, the "Sunshine Laundry") because the "three stooges" vote to accept the property owner’s "gift" was sufficient and Mayor Ireton is the "4th stooge" in that instance. They have no qualms about taking the property, which is known to be contaminated and will require extensive – and very expensive – environmental remediation. The cost to do so is unknown and the City is strapped for funds.

But there may a fly in the BS served up by the ignoramus quartet. Apparently, the property owner of the "Linens of the Week" property won’t play ball with the City without getting its "hold harmless" protection against any liability. So this seems more like a "deal" than a true "gift," because, in order to get the property the City must undertake to absorb any costs whatsoever that the current owner or "its affiliates" might bear because of the pollution. As someone pointed out during the public comments on Monday night, that might require an ordinance and not just a resolution.

The big disappointment at the meeting was that the declared candidates in the audience declined to speak to these matters, especially Mr. Boda, who claims to be a small government style fiscal conservative. It’s easy to whine about excessive spending but quite a different thing to oppose spending when it could cost you votes.

Boda is SAPOA's hand-picked successor for Bubba Comegys.

I second that motion!

Letter to the editor II

Joe speaking of the City of Salisbury any word on why some of the firefighters in the Salisbury Fire Department are jumping ship? Is it because they are being forced out or retaliation?

There have been several volunteer firefighters that recently bailed out and some have stepped down from their officer ranks. Just this week it was announced that volunteer assistant chief Steve Records resigned his position from assistant chief to firefighter. It was said to be because the company he works for does business with the city fire department. How ironic that Steve's company has been doing business with the city for several years and now all of a sudden it is a conflict!! Is that the case or was it because Bill Gordy didn't like Steve questioning him about running the new chief down while attending little Gordy's graduation in North Carolina? Or was it because the new chief had a hard on for Steve for various reasons from the first day he took the position. If anyone needs to resign it should be Bill Gordy and Jeff Simpson.

There was a firefighter paramedic that resigned about 2 weeks ago and just on Tuesday it was reported that Assistant Chief Dru Bragg resigned from the fire department after 16 years of service. He was also recently the acting Deputy Chief before Ireton hired the outsider. These people aren't liked by everyone, but they served the city faithfully for many years and deserve to be treated better than this outsider and a few of his back stabbing butt kissers are treating them. Thank you Jim Ireton and the 5 city council members for screwing the servants and citizens of Salisbury!

Please feel free to post this at your convenience.

"Mr. Boda, who claims to be a small government style fiscal conservative."

And he is working for a big corporation that has run thousands of small stores out of business.

It has been widely rumored that SAPOA under the cloak of the Chamber will back 3 candidates with significant resources so that they can control a majority of hte council in order to "crush" Debbie Campbell & Jim Ireton. I am not a fan or Ireton, but as a voter will do everything in my power to cast my vote for candidates with a track record. I will vote for Terry Cohen and Tim Spies. They have both repeatedly put their necks on the line for what is right and have endured the attacks of SAPOA and special interest groups. I have to wonder about the little frill piece on WMDT last night anticipating Louise SMith's press conference tomorrow. It was oddly absent of any footage of the gavel banging for which she has become well known, not to mention those snotty letters to those who have had the audacity to speak in disagreement with Smith during public comment at council meetings.
Sadly, I predict many unsavory maneuvers by those who don't want Salisbury to have leaders who put the interests of the city before all else. Lies will be spread in an attempt to discredit Cohen and Spies just like in the last election...letters from landlords to tenants, etc.

Could someone clarify for me whose Council terms are up this year? I know, of course, that Cohen's is and that she has filed to run again. Louise Smith's is up, and she will announce tomorrow whether she'll run for re-election. Is Comegys' term also up this year?

Right now the only SAPOA acolyte in the pot in Boda, but Comegys and Smith may declare -- Louweasel has a media event tomorrow (in the Council Chambers would you believe?) to tell us whether she is going to run for reelection.

Comegys, if he's smart, will tell SAPOA "no thanks."

Don't be surprised if SAPOA gets Cathcart to make an encore because Bubba probably won't tum again.

Has anyone found out how much money the City will have to pay back to the Federal Govt for the land next to the river that was sold to Palmer? That was the Open Spaces grant money? Is anything going on with the depositions on the firehouse? Is all this still a secret or hush hush?????

Another one is resigning today as well!!

Anon 1:03 You mean the property clearly stated by Mrs. Cohen at the City Council meeting that she knew nothing about. You must purchase Open Space land from that purchase. Again failure from our council to protect the best interest of the taxpayers.

Everyone knows Paul Wilbur, Pam Oland and John Pick are incompetent hacks gorging themselves on the taxpayer dime. Ireton was supposed to change that--install people who would have the business sense to protect the taxpayers. But once again we were "louweaseled".

I'm with you.
Some people call Cohen a nitpicker, but she's doing the job that Smith, Comegy and Shields aren't - looking out for the taxpayers. It may not be exciting watching on PAC14 but that's what government mostly is.
I'd rather wait and have my trail guide look under every rock ahead of me than have him or her tell me that the way is clear without looking, then be bitten by the snake he or she didn't bother to look for. If I had a guide like that I they would be fired.
