NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- There will be fewer cops patrolling the streets of Camden, N.J., come Tuesday.
Struggling to close a $26.5 million budget gap, the city with the second highest crime rate in the nation is laying off 163 police officers. That's nearly 44% of the force.
And Camden will also lose 60 of its 215 firefighters. Some people with desk jobs will be demoted and reassigned to the streets.
The mayor's office says that the cuts will not affect public safety.
"We're still going to protect our residents," said Robert Corrales, spokesman for Mayor Dana Redd. Public safety "will remain our top concern. We'll shift our resources to be more efficient with what we have."

BS!!!!! It will affect it in every way!!! 44% of the work force terminated is huge! Just another example of how the ignorance of the unqualified people working the budget. And the lonely worker has to pay for it in the long run as well as the community. I can't fatham cutting public safety in todays time!

1112-Are you mentally disabled? The city of Camden is run by a Democrat, the CITY budget. This has nothing to do with Christie, who's doing a helluva job cleaning up the mess of the last 3-4 decades.
Camden. A big hole should be dug and the city pushed into it. I'll bet not a single public housing unit will be closed, no cuts in food stamps, or taxpayer funded energy payments, or any reduction in free health care or free breakfast, lunches, and after school food programs (isn't THAT what food stamps are for?) or anything else like that. Just the police and firefighters. Vote Democrat and buy more guns, citizens of Camden. You're gonna need 'em.
They probably had that many people not actually working so it was a good way to get rid of them!

This is a good cut. At least the welfare isnt being touched.
Check you facts,11:57. Governor Christie cut state aid to Camden which made up 80% of their budget last year. Everything they do has to be approved by the state, so I would say he at least has a hand in it. I think one should also look at the unions and their battles with the mayor. It's not all that simple.
