From 6-8p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1514 Old Ocean City Road, Mayor Ireton will attend a Lower Eastern Shore Latino Community Forum organized by Jacqueline Lisjuan, to discuss important topics pertaining to the Hispanic Community in our area.
“The Hispanic community has changed from being known as the seasonal farm working community to college students, small business owners, community activists, legal advisers, and professionals who are staying in the area purchasing their own homes and calling Delmarva home. The Latino community in this area is very diverse and makes up a great deal of this population. We have a lot to offer with our beliefs, education, careers, and diversity. This event will begin to build a bridge of communication and cooperation that is desperately needed. I look forward to supporting Mayor Ireton in his efforts to serve the people of Salisbury,” said Jacqueline Lisjuan Latino Forum Coordinator.

she forgot to add all the other things they offer our coumminity, blighted neighborhoods, overburdened schools, hospitals, government services, polics departments, prisons. Yeah

One diversity is that most are not here legal. How long before they run my flag up upside down at a local high school?
The Latino community has more culture and more to offer than any of you redneck racists could understand!
There is plenty of white trash around here that has been here for generations don't pick on a good, hard working people.
Today they do your lawn and tomorrow their kid will be your doctor.
I don't think the negative attitudes toward the Hispanic community have to do with racism as much as they have to do with that community's willful disregard of the status of those who are here illegally.
Most Hispanic folks I've known are great people- very hard workers, and very nice.
But to just ignore our laws and jump the fence because you feel like you have some right to be here is NOT going to make you too many friends.
And just because we object, that doesn't make us racists, either.
We have always offered lots of opportunities for people to immigrate legally, meld into our social fabric and prosper as fellow Americans.
But don't just sneak in, then join some group of activists and try to tell us of your 'rights' and what kind of contributions you're making.
It will fall on deaf ears.
If you aren't here legally, you aren't welcome.
