Salisbury’s Housing Official To Attend National Conference

Tom Stevenson, Director of Neighborhood Services and Code Compliance (NSCC) will attend the 2010 National Educational Code Enforcement Conference in Glendale, Arizona this week.

The conference is hosted by the American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE). Stevenson has been an active member of the association for a number of years. Topics covered at the conference this year include; Court Case Preparation, Grants and Homeland Security and Officer Safety, just to name a few.

Stevenson was recently elected by his peers from across the State to serve a two year term as President of the Code Enforcement and Zoning Officials Association (CEZOA). CEZOA is the Maryland State Chapter and is a Department of the Maryland Municipal League (MML). As the President of CEZOA, Mr. Stevenson also has a seat on the Maryland Municipal League’s Board of Directors.

“Aside from the training, exposure to nationwide best practices and the networking opportunities; the high point of the event will be representing CEZOA, the City of Salisbury and the State of Maryland at the Annual State Presidents Meeting,” Stevenson said.

“Mr. Stevenson and his department are an integral part of our Safe Streets Coalition. His tireless efforts, and the efforts of his staff, have enabled the city to work collectively to identify chronic problem properties and the slum and blight they bring to our city. Mr. Stevenson's attendance at this conference is another step in his leading the Neighborhood Services and Code Compliance to even greater efficiency and levels of success,” Mayor Ireton said.

All of Mr. Stevenson’s expenses are being funded by CEZOA.

Why is this note worthy?

Should that be "SAPOA"?

I wonder if -- as a member of MML's Board of Directors -- he supports the Comegys' plan that it is pushing to get total taxing power for Maryland cities -- like that "sign tax" in Fruitland, as well as a sales tax on telephone bills, and bills for power and gas & electricity, as well as on food (meals) in restaurants.

With the additional tax money the city could increase his salary.

With some of the neighborhoods in Salisbury, such as the Booth St Apts, in such trashy disarray, I'm wondering where all of this man's "training" and "education" are...I've said before and stand by it --- Code & Compliance is a racist department that is often used to exact revenge on those who complain about its selective enforcement and businesses who are harrassed continuously because it's easy money for the city.

Is this so he can better learn how to send his minions out to torment the taxpaying homeowners with stupid notices about stupid stuff? I know of TWO city homeowners (read-taxpayers) that have been given little "notices" by NCC for stupid stuff, nothing dangerous or nothing that detracts from the beauty of the neighborhood. This is right near an area that is so full of blight and violations that it would keep his little minions busy for weeks! I guess it is safer for them to go there than go to the neighborhoods that need it. The cars might get stolen.
