Friday night a smaller than usual crowd gathered at the GOB for their tree lighting ceremony and an early visit from Santa.
I've been there several times in the past when the weather was much colder. Speculating why the crowd was smaller, well, it could be a multitude of reasons. All I can tell you is, most of the people in attendance had a child there singing or participating in the pre lighting show.
I'm sure many people had truly hoped things would be much different morale wise in the City after electing a new Mayor. Perhaps it just takes time.
After seeing this crowd, I didn't make the effort to attend the lighting in the Park the following evening.
Many made remarks about how tiny the tree is and they're right. I'd say it was no more than double the size of a regular tree you'd have in your home. Many also remarked about how the tree across Rt. 50 at the Church, (already light up) would have made for a much better tree. To look at the base stand that holds up the tree, the trunk of the current tree left at least 90% of the stand empty.
Nevertheless, it's the symbol of the season that counts. A smaller tree means less lights and a lower electric bill. Maybe they can use the savings to hire another Police Officer.

Low attendance was due to people being out of town for the weekend. I like it when the lighting takes place during the work week. You cannot please everyone. It is great that they have a ceremony. We are sorry that we could not attend.
I believe it is all the fighting going on with the city council and the mayor. People just dont want to be around that. It is a wonder we didnt ask the council if we should light the tree..we would have a 3 to 2 vote and there would be no lighting of the tree. AND no santa.

Yes, the tree was a bit smaller than previous years. Maybe it's time to plant a tree in the plaza and not cut one down every year.

Is it me or do most people and events seem to be kinda of "bah hum bug" this year?
Everything is so negative! Times are hard and it is finally hitting us here.
In the past the tree was donated. If it was this year I guess we have succeeded in making someone doing a good deed look like crap!
It is my understanding that they are not even going to keep the Santa House out there through Christmas either. It is to be removed one day this week and put away till next year... What's up with that.
I moved here 10 years ago, and this is the first time I attended the lighting. It was wonderful...especially the "Annie" reenactment! Those kids are talented! However, when the adult choir began singing the "Christmas Carols," it was in Spanish then gospel, which is just fine, but no one knew the words to those unfamiliar songs. Shouldn't they have been traditional carols?? We left during that musical part to walk around downtown...just to find that most everything was closed! How depressing! Nothing going on downtown on a Friday night. Nightlife here sucks.

10:17, what an ignorant comment about the 3 to 2 vote. You make it sound like Campbell and Cohen would have voted against a tree lighting! I have seen both down at the tree lightings various years. I did not this year, but am not sure if they were not there or I just missed seeing them.
Both are very community minded ladies. Thanks to Mrs. Cohen's mentoring some years back, my daughter decided to go back to college and get a degree.
I declare, some people can turn just anything into a negative political comment on here. First it's tree lightings, next it will be babies, puppies and apple pie!
