Wicomico K-5 Students Offered Free Intranasal FluMist Vaccine; Consent Form Must Be Returned To School

The Wicomico County School System and the Wicomico County Health Department will be working together in the coming weeks to offer the FluMist intranasal vaccine to Wicomico elementary students in school clinics scheduled from Oct. 21-29. The 2010-11 Influenza vaccine will contain protection against three common influenza strains, including the 2009 H1N1 strain.

Consent forms for the FluMist vaccine have already gone home to elementary parents/guardians, and students whose parents/guardians sign and return the consent form will receive the vaccination free on the day that their school’s clinic is scheduled. Check with your child’s school if you need a replacement form or if you have any questions.

The schedule of school clinics is as follows:

Oct. 21 (AM): Westside Intermediate, West Salisbury, North Salisbury
Oct. 21 (PM): Northwestern, Pinehurst
Oct. 22 (AM): Pemberton, Prince Street
Oct. 22 (PM): Willards, Beaver Run
Oct. 28 (AM): East Salisbury, Delmar
Oct. 28 (PM): Fruitland Primary, Westside Primary
Oct. 29 (AM): Chipman, Fruitland Intermediate, Glen Avenue
Oct. 29 (PM): Pittsville

A parent/guardian who wants a child to receive the injectable form of the seasonal flu vaccine at the Wicomico County Health Department can call 410-543-6943.

Parents should be informed that the intra-nasal flu mist does have an active virus. Children with asthma or compromised immune systems should not receive the flu mist but should have the injectable flu virus, which has an inactive (dead) virus.

10:34 That is great information. My kids will not receive the mist but will get the shot. I'm still not happy about the H1N1 being added to the flu shot this year but I guess it has been deemed safe after all of the people that received it last year.

How about "NO FLU VACCINE!". It's the drug companies that are pushing this crap. Just like companies pushed for antibiotic-everything from soap to hand towels. Why all of a sudden are we worried about catching the flu? It's only a problem for babies, the old, and those with compromised immunity.

Well 11:22, If i can avoid my kid being violently sick (flu) then I'm going too.

11:22 - you are correct! No flu shots for my family!

Flu shots = FIAT CURRENCY ... educate yourselves before we all perish

11:22 - I think you may have missed something here and although you are correct about the CDC guidlines to the at risk target pupulation, the flu shot should certaioly be taken by all of us, because we will all be exposed at some point, like it or not. The shot certainly is not a cure for the flu, but just takes the edge off...which is a GOOD thing because if you get a nasty H1N1 stand, you could expose the target group. This is about social responsibility, and while I didn't want to do this for my kids, I did it anyway. They are in the target group, and are always exposed in their day care setting, and so is everyone else who comes into contact with them. Stats on the vaccine are solid from what I have read, and J. Alvarado supported this for these reasons. Boy, do I wish he was alive to comment on this, because the guy was just amazing and only knowing him for two years, I was consistanly impressed with the man, his uncanny way of knowing exactly what was wrong with your child, and the amound of research he immersed himself in - and the fact that he always told you the truth. Yes, the drug companies are getting rich off of their scare tactics, but there is actually quite a bit of truth from what I have read.

If people would cover their sneezes and coughs and stay HOME when they're sick with the flu - we others wouldn't have to worry about catching it!
Last week we went to bingo in Pittsville. The lady sitting next to me hacked almost the entire 2nd half and barely even covered her mouth! Then, the lady next to my husband started coughing and sneezing!
The whole room seemed to be full of these people!
I went outside during intermission and somebody out there said "well it doesn't look like it's the smoker's in there hacking tonight - go figure"!
Everyone looked at her like she was crazy but I know exactly what she was saying!
Be considerate of others - if you're sick - stay HOME!
If you're out when it starts - be considerate and cover!
