Deer Lets People Pet Him In La Plata

La Plata, Md. - It's not something you see every day, a deer approaching humans and letting people pet him. It happened Saturday in the backyard of a family in La Plata, Md.

Shelby Dunlap says her dog, Ginger, saw the deer first and started barking. The deer kept coming closer, until, her father, Steven Pollard, felt comfortable enough to touch it. The deer appeared to like being petted, and stuck around the house for several hours, while family members fed it apples and corn. It got close enough to nuzzle the family dog.

You should never do this! It is dangerous for all concerned (this deer may not be so friendly doing breeding season). Also, it will not fair to well during hunting season without its' natural fear of humans.

My guess is that this deer was tamed by some other person or fanily long before this video took place. And further agree completely with Anonymous 8:45 AM. If you saw a fox in the middle of the road intentionally heading towards you as I did this summer on my bike, you would know that he's probably sick or rabid, either of which, you leave. As I was turning the bike around he was gaining ground on me for a short while, so I know that I made the right decission rather than try to go by him. If the people in this video really cared about the deer, they would not feed or pet it again (still plenty of natural food out there for them to eat) and should scare it away (I would probably fire a shotgun several times in the air to scare it away from humans). At least the deer would have a better chance of survival during hunting season. As it stands, Mr.Hunter will be taking Bambie home for dinner or mounting on his wall at their first encounter due to the animal lovers. It's a real injustice to try to domesticate wild animals that are hunted.
