The Daily Times Does It Again!

http://www.delmarvanow.com/article/20101030/OPINION01/10300358/1014/OPINION/Times-Endorsements--Mathies-could-be-first-African-American-member

MY Response: Daily Times you make me sick with your Racist comment about Mr. Mathies. If you want to endorse someone that is fine with me. BUT to say you endorse someone because he is black and would better serve the "Minority" district is a JOKE! Van Muir has poured his heart and soul into Somerset County living their all his life. Maybe you haven't done your job right and knowing who Van Muir is. Ask any minority in the community or even Mr. Kirkland Hall about Van Muir. Maybe it's because you have never been behind the scenes years ago and even now on how Mr. Muir has been there and helped the "Minority" community. He as help the kids in little league, helped those who didn't have a meal, helped those who needed health care, and given his time in other ways you do not know about. Mr. Muir has supported the kids in the Greenwood and Princess Anne area all his life. He cares about all kids no matter of their race, religion or creed. That goes for adults as well.

I challenge NAACP President Mr. Hall to say a bad thing about Mr. Muir. I have grown up with Mr. Hall and he too has been good to me and my family. I have seen first hand Mr. Hall and Mr. Muir work together with the "Minority" community. To tell everyone to vote for Mr. Mathies because he will make a difference because he will be the first "BLACK"/"Minority" man to me is totally a racial statement and I hope Mr. Muir will contact his lawyer and challenge you. But knowing Mr. Muir that will never happen. It's crap statements that you all write that makes you all look so stupid and ignorant. Comments like that continues to show that "RACE" is the issue and it should not be. Mr. Hall can attest to that. Isn't that what the NAACP fights for. If the citizens what to vote for Mr. Mathies then do so because he has the experience and knowledge to lead Somerset County in the right direction. I say Mr. Van Muir has more experience, knowledge and has been proven to help the "Minority" community.

Mr. Muir is a full time citizen of Somerset County all his life and has been married to the same wonderful lady for over 40 years. He has given to Somerset County all his entire life and wants to continue to pour his sincere offerings to the citizens NO MATTER WHAT Color, religion, or creed. That is what is needed in Somerset County. If a Purple, Blue, or Green person has the experience then vote them in..But not because of their race and the daily times thinks "Now is the Time". That is a load of crap and any person should realize that who has a heart and is tired of the Race Card to being played." I expect the Daily Times apologize to to Van Muir for their comments!!" It was totally wrong!!!

Once again the Gannet Group has proved their intent to self-destruct. Why they continue to roll out that fish wrap every day boggles the mind.

PART 1
A Mathies victory would not only be historic, but long overdue."
It appears to me, in this sentence, Mathies, bearing an historic feature and so overdue are the major qualifications for which he should be elected as a Commissioner. I bet if you ask the several NFL coaches tomorrow whether historic and overdue were the qualifications for selecting their team players, they would laugh in your face. Of course, my point is, that being chosen to serve your fellow citizens, because you are black and the fact their hasn't been a black commissioner elected in Somerset county, bears very little relevance to what is important when selecting a player, elected official or whoever wants to serve the public. At the recent Art Shell Golf Tournament I spoke at length with a former Washington Redskin football player (fine black individual) about this very subject. He explained that he played only one year as a linebacker. The following year he was cut by the coaching staff because a younger player who out played him took his place. You see its performance and ability that counts, not the color of your skin nor because you are overdue.

The political fact in this race is that candidate Mathies wouldn't run at all if commissioner James Ring had ran for office. What of the fact that Commissioner Ring served for 24 years and was never challenged by a black candidate, although some rumblings sounded that a black/minority candidate should run. None dared run. Ring must have served the minority public very favorably, contrary to the statement you wrote saying "Muir cannot offer the minority representation at the county level that is sorely needed." What more representation is needed than that which Ring provided for 24 years?

PART 2
Now lets talk candidates. Seems to me you didn't point out that Muir served his county rather well by 39 years in the Princess Anne Fire Company, more than 20 years as President of the Little League and over 20 years on the county Parks and Recreation Commission and 20 years as a Maryland State Trooper. Just think of that record and compare it to today's cry for help throughout the community in which leaders are so badly needed. In my opinion those qualifications trump those of Mathie's being a used-car salesman and a member of some civic organizations. A candidate should be held to those high standards of proven leadership, not just highly qualified because of their race. Van Muir is a candidate who would offer professional service to all residents of Somerset County just as he has in all of his former areas. He should be the one being endorsed by the Daily Times.

One more thought needs to be presented and discussed, and that is where is the Minority District now, it apparently isn't with the blacks or other races in District 1, but it is the whites who are now in the minority in District 1. Seems as though a large group of minorities have registered to vote, thus causing a reverse balance in the population. This is very true and calls for a new alignment of voters to give equal representation to all voters in District 1. Somerset can no longer afford to have a minority district. Equality and truth must be for all.

Joe, thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. I have known Mr. Van Muir all my life and there is not a finer man. He has given so much to his community and to anyone who was in need of help. After my husband was killed he called and asked me stop by and bring my son who was 8 at the time. He gave my son his MD State Police yearbook from several years ago so that my son would have something to remind him of his Dad's years of service in the state police. These books are very rare and I'm sure it meant alot to him but he put my son first. That's the kind of man Van Muir is. I only wish I lived in his district so I could vote for him.

Van Muir has a stellar reputation in Somerset County. I have known his family for years. He is a "stand-up guy." He would make a good county commissioner, just as he excelled in police work. There is no finer man in Somerset County.

Yet, this district is a minority district. Despite a very sizeable minority population as compared to other area counties, Somerset has never had a black person on the County Council. Surely, that cannot be justified. I do not know Craig Mathies, but I do know some other Mathieses in the county. He deserves a chance to represent the African-American constituency on the Council. African-Americans deserve one of their own. It's only right.

Van Muir, Sr., I am sure, would be of enormous assistance to Craig Mathies. Somerset County cannot afford to lose Muir's expertise.

To 3:54-
There's no need to refer to him as an African-American... just American will work. I do not think he was born in Africa.

Wow, this is interesting because look at some of the other candidates they endorsed.

For example, Jimmy Schoolfield a candidate for District 1 and back by Lee (NAACP President) who has absolutely no experience, no education, lied and said he was a minister - when he's actually an associate minister - with an extensive and continuing criminal record.

Did they pick mostly Democrat or NAACP endorsed candidates?

Some one should look into this. Thank God most people have and use their brains.
