Trooper’s Car Struck In Accident

Location: Eastbound US Rt. 40 (Pulaski Highway) at DE State Route 1 southbound on-ramp, Bear, DE

Date of Occurrence: Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 2:38 p.m.

Operators/Vehicles:

Operator 1: Gerald S. Rockwood, 70, Chittenango, NY
Vehicle 1: 2000 Chevrolet Astro

Operator 2: 41 year old trooper stationed at Troop 3, Camden, DE
Vehicle 2: 2007 Ford Crown Victoria

Resume: A Delaware State Trooper was slightly injured in a two vehicle accident this afternoon in Bear.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. yesterday afternoon as a State Trooper was operating his fully marked Ford Crown Victoria and was attempting to make a left hand turn from US Rt. 40 westbound onto the ramp to DE Rt. 1 southbound on a green light. As the trooper was crossing the eastbound lanes of US Rt. 40, his vehicle was struck on the right hand side by a Chevrolet Astro van that was being operated by Gerald Rockwood and which was traveling on US Rt. 40 eastbound.

The Trooper was transported by a second state trooper to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated and released for an injury to his ankle. Gerald Rockwood was not injured. Both operators were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The investigation is on going and no charges have been filed at this time.
