"You might want to check into the appalling and unhealthy conditon of the County's Carriage House at Winterplace, which the County "rented" to the Wicomico Farm and Home Show, rather than give them assistance as the other lower shore counties do their fair. The building would be condemed if it it was not owned by the county."

The condition of the building was very noticeable during the Farm & Home Show. Very noticeable violations were seen by anyone with their eyes open. I agree that there should not have been a charge to rent to the show, no matter what condition the building was in. Isn't the County Extension Service involved in the annual show? The County Council should vote to waive any fees to the Farm Bureau but especially in lieu of the dump that was used!
I agree, this building is falling apart. What is sad is the condition of the grand chandelier that once hung from the center of this once great building.It is in a corner (roped off); and it is pitiful. Bird droppings all over the glass prism, the brass candles.Some of the prisms have fallen off,broken,scattered around.Why can't this be restored and rehung; or if too costly why not auction it off? I say shame on Wicomico County for not keeping this building up.
Just a few facts about the Wicomico Farm & Home Show.
The County Extension is not involved in the Wicomico Farm & Home Show. The 4-H participates in the show and their agent is an employee of the County Extension. They in no way help monetarily with the show. And the Farm Bureau is not involved either. They are a totally independent organinzation.
The rent we (Wicomico Farm & Hone Show)pay for the Carriage House is paid to Wicomico Parks & Rec. Rent is paid to the Equestrian Center for the use of the grounds. So there are 2 separate "landlords"
The Wicomico Farm & Home Show is a group of dedicated volunteers who put the show on. We have 2 basket bingo's - one in the spring and the other in late fall - to help offset the costs of the show. We get business sponsors for any number of things that go on at the show. Also, we have a cake auction on Thursday night and a benfit auction on Friday night to help offset the costs of putting the show on.
We do get a grant from the Maryland State Fairboard to help offset the cost of the premiums paid out. But we don't receive enough to cover the actual amount we pay out. And we have already been notified that what we will receive for next year has been cut 25%.
We have absolutely NO assistance from Wicomico County. Somerset County, the "poorest" county in this great state of ours, gives the Somerset Fair the use of their civic center and also kicks in a cash donation of several thousand dollars. SHAME ON WICOMICO.
Next year, 2011, will be the 75th year for the show. And the future looks dim for another 25 years.

Great question! What happened to the chandeliers? I did not see them this year? Did I miss them?
Wicomico County doesn't spend money on anything other than parking lots that are in need of repair, farm land for parks that will never be built, county exec employees that serve no purpose. Every county in the state has a fair that is supported by the county EXCEPT Wicomico. Listen to the local politicians spewing their rhetoric regarding farmers and agriculture yet they don't support a county fair. They are all hipocrits that want to do nothing but rid the area of farmers. Hope that money they make off the farmers tastes good.
I miss the days when the Wico. County Farm & Home Show was at the Civic Center and it was huge! The new and old part of the building were full of booths, and so many animals and rides outside. Those were good times....
