Mayor’s Statement on Salisbury Homicides

“The Salisbury community has been shaken by 3 homicides over the past 36 hours. The Salisbury Police Department preemptively began the investigations into these homicides on 7/18/10, even before the coroner’s office ruled them to be as such.

Immediately the SPD called in their partners with the following jurisdictions: Maryland State Police-Homicide Unit, Gang Unit, and Crime Scene Unit, Maryland State Apprehension Team, Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation, Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force, and Wicomico Sheriff’s Department Deputies and K9 Units. I thank the State’s Attorney, the Sheriff, and MSP Barracks Commander for quickly partnering with us as our investigations began. An examination of the calls for service to Emory Court, the location of the double homicide, show 283 calls for service to the street in the last 2 years.

I assure the community of my confidence in our police department and in the partnerships that our Safe Streets Coalition creates. I ask the public to have confidence knowing that every lead is being investigated, every witness interviewed, and every person of interest is being tracked down.”

I just had to respond to this message, you know me.

While the Mayor and City Council furlough POLICE OFFICERS and REDUCE funding from the Salisbury Police Department from their budget, what a load of sh!t.

I'll repeat, Council President Louise Smith stated publicly crime was the #1 issue in Salisbury, then they cut their funding!!!!!

Be VERY scared citizens of Salisbury. When the TRUTH comes out about these MURDERS, (I'm not at liberty to share it right now) you'll start packing your bags like many others have done, are now doing and plan to do.

I spoke with one person today who told me they just rented a home to someone well outside the City because crime is out of control. They sold their home in the City Limits and got the heck out of here.

Sorry Mayor Ireton but we've heard this far too many times in the past and I for one do NOT believe YOU. YOU cannot fight this kind of crime with the same amount of Officers you had in the 1980's, so cut the BS! You cannot fight crime while you load up the Fire Department with a $900,000.00 FIRE BOAT!

You people are so full of sh!t it isn't funny. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

There are witness's that know something I hope they step up and do the right thing .

I was just at the chamber event at the mall this evening. Mayor Ireton had the balls to show up announce the news about the homicides and then say " but crime is down 10%". The worst is the crowd was clapping in applause for this man. I dont feel 10% safer at all. This is crazy this man is the mayor. What a tool. Last point the event was to celebrate the the centre and this guy is using the business after hours as a pulpit to put himself over.

This is not a new phenomenon. Hoodlums and the crime they bring have gradually been increasing in sby for the past 15 years.

YAWN!!

so for two years nothing was done. If this crime had not occured it would have "only" been 282 calls for service....HELLOOOOOOOOO. WTF - that's enough crime to warrent a substation you fool. Let's just ignore all those calls and spend more money on tooting our own horn about being a (damn laughable) "all american city". The council needs to go, the mayor needs to go, Pick needs to go and the entire wasted staff at the top of the county (Shea, Finneran, Creamer, et al) needs to go. DO SOMETHING YOU FOOLS - ANYTHING - or step aside and let someone else with a set try to do something.

I came to Salisbury in 2001 to go to College & I decided to make it my home. I loved it there. I made so many friends & those friends have since became like family. As time went on I realized that I was scared to go from my car to my house. I would carry my cell phone with 911 ready. That is when I decided my life was more important than living in Salisbury. I have since moved to Delmar & have been happy to call it my home for 2 years now. A friend recently asked me to help her find a place to live in Salisbury that was safe. I just laughed and said you better find something on the outskirts b/c there is no safe place anymore in Salisbury. It makes me sad to think a place I once called home has turned to this. It is out of control. lon

I don't think there have been any calls for SFD in the past 6 months that a boat would of been needed yet look how much funding that could of helped SPD. As long as you have a council member who happens to be a former fire dept member, it won't change.

One-term Mayor, you lied to all of us when you said change was on it's way. Every time you open your mouth you lie. How many deaths will be on YOUR one-term?

The guy was smothered and the girl was stabbed I heard on the radio is there more to know ?

Here is an Idea..Put the fire boat in the middle of Emory Ct..and SPD can work out of it???????....I hear a lot of scampering now that there is 3 murders in less than 36 hrs....Yep Cut back on SPD and $$$ or save lives...People U need to wake up and decide where U REALLY NEED to cut back...But SAFETY IS NOT the answer or to give furloughs (DUMB AZZ IDEAS)--Tomorrow it could be your loved one--(DONT SAY IT CANT HAPPEN!!)

Much more of this sh#t and it's time to call out the National Guard and declare martial law in the "Bury" (great name: how many will be buried before the mayor and council stop talking and start doing something about the crime problem )??

God rest his soul...Colburn Dykes would have mounted his M-60, saddled his troops, and taken the hill...he always knew how to handle thugs and knuckleheads and he demanded it of his staff...and he is rolling over in his grave with the notion that Salisbury PD is calling in MSP to "help"...all the help in the world and a city continues to bleed out before our eyes. Mayor, you do not inspire greatness in our city...City Council, your division is a disgrace as both sides stand in self righteous shoes pointing the finger at the other...grow up! Come together, or get out of the way for those who will!

there's a lot that you never hear about too
they don't want to scare off students, tourists and retirees Webster wasn't going off to FBI retreats for the golf..ok maybe he was but.........the violence is just the thugs there's very organized big money dealings going on by people thought to be upstanding god fearing good folks

Yet another mayor with no BALLS! Everyone thought the last no BALLS mayor was bad just look at what you got now! At least the last one could make a decision all though it might not have been the best one. This one cant even stand up to Louise let alone to stand up against the real thugs of Salisbury.

CURFEW CURFEW and then shoot to kill if violated. No exceptions. or better yet, bring back the draft - if I am going to be spending "X" amount of dollars supporting these thugs and asshol*s, I would rather it be by having them overseas, getting shot at for a change instead of sitting in a country club with 3 hots and a cot.

Our citizens continue to be victimized with, murder, rape, assaults, burglaries and felony thefts.

Our police officers, deputies and troopers are protecting us by writing hundreds or traffic citations every day.

Are they balancing the State of Maryland budget or are they a bit afraid to get involved with real crime.

Sheriff, Chief and Barrack Commanders.... turn off the radar and cell phones. Get your people into the neighborhoods and protect and serve the people you are supposed to.

I want to set the record straight about the murder on Charles St because I was there. There was a citizen there that administered cpr to the victim while Salisbury's finest sat around and just watched. They did nothing to help the situation that was unfolding, i thought their job was to serve and protect but all they did was basically watch him die. Not to mention when the EMS arrived, they took their sweet time assisting the situation. As far as I'm concerned our public servants aren't worth crap. Thanks a lot SPD you guys really make me feel safe.

Ok let's listen to the people who call SPD and the task force about the drug dealers in our neighborhood. Carrolton Ave has plenty, Prince Street has plenty, and so does Roger Street! Clean the whole area over there!!

Another event unheard of, there was a body discovered on Fooks Road last night. It however was deemed a suicide.

If all 3 of the people that were murdered have history of crime, and gang relations, then maybe justice was done, (Street Justice), let them all kill each other out and leave the innocent out of it. What was and how long ago was the last murder in Salisbury? Some cities have this problem everyday.

People across the country ahd beetter stop playing around and get a survival attitude. That's right, a survival attitude. Some of you expect law enforcement to protect you from thugs. Sure they can arrest the AFTER the fact and try their best to put them away for a while. The judicial system, however, is letting them go before the ink on the police report is dry. Law enforcement can not protect you from violent criminals. We have to step up and take responsibility for our own safety.

I find it amusing the mayor said the police department "preemptively" began a homicide investigation even before the M.E. confirmed the deaths were murder. God help us if Salisbury police officer can't recognize a murder scene before it is officially pronounced by a M.E. That terminology was simply smoke and mirror B.S. by the mayor to tickle the testicles of the less enlightened among us.

12:14...Just what I've been sayin' all along...Real crime is on the backburner for one reason -- MONEY. There ain't no profit (thats what I said--- PROFIT) in patrolling well known crime areas. Anybody can get crack, a gun, buy a hooker, etc, 24-7 in this town. And it doesn't seem like the thugs and wannabe gangsters are too afraid of the police doing anything about it because its pretty much done right out in the open. However, HONEST and TAXPAYING citizens can't drive to their jobs or go to the grocery store without running a gauntlet of police (Sheriff's Patrol, Salisbury Police, State Police, Fruitland Police, etc) who are extra vigilant for those bad-ass criminals who dare to drive without their seat belt! Those cops should be ASHAMED to be doing that when such a high level of REAL crime is being committed. But they are not, being convinced by their own rhetoric and self-congratulation that they "serve" (lol) and "protect" (LOL). Serve and Protect who?? What? The state economy? I'm NOT feeling very protected....

To the person who stated that the reason is rentals...I rent in Salisbury, however, I do not have any criminal habits. I don't believe that it has anything to do with it. Everyone needs a place to live, whether they own or rent. It has gotten to the point that I carry mace with me whenever I leave my apartment. I know it will not hold up to a gun, but it will give me a fighting chance.
The bottom line is that Salisbury Police Department and the Mayor need to step up and protect it's citizens. I have called the "non-emergency" number and requested additional patrols be done in my complex because there has been a large increase in the number of "shady" people in and out of apartments on my second floor, however, I have not seen one cruiser come through there.
It has gotten so bad that I have found a used syringe, a crack pipe (?), and a baggie with a white rock in it on my staircase. I disposed of them because there are children on my floor and my dog may have picked them up. I know what most of you are thinking and that is that it is time to move, however, I can't afford anything else in Salisbury or outside of it. The rent for any "safe" area is astronimcal and way out of price range for many people living alone. What is a girl to do??

Well thank you Mayor for your 2 cents worth. Your C.I.D. Squad is investigating the case and really could care less. A member of the bloods with a history of crime was shot dead. The other two were involve in bad deals also and are dead. Cruise the streets of Salisbury today and its business as usual. Hookers at the Thrift and Chesapeake, dealers on Railroad and Church St. These thugs dont care about you or your cops. In turn the cops turn a blind eye to what goes on. After all their under staffed and furloughed out. If you were really serious about the situation you would blitz the area with a strong police presence. Its not happening and others will die, so please save your ink with your comments.

Yes, rentals & greed. And it's a damn shame. I've lived in Salisbury since 1992, and watched very carefully how some places have been overrun by some of the wrong people. And handcuffing SPD? Yes, that's the right thing to do. Back in New York, when Rudy Giuliani was mayor, the people cried for the streets to be cleaned up, and then cried when he did it. But eventually, he got things done. I'm still hoping that some law abiding citizen with legal firepower such as myself can put some of these pukes in the can for good where they belong. Some of these punks need to run across some of the good 'ol deer huntin' boys and get some seriously good holes in their a$$es. I got plenty of ammo myself, i can give 'em 45ACP, 10mm, .357, they can get their pick - and i gotta lot of good friends, male & female - who think the same way. Maybe we'll get lucky. Again, as Admiral Halsey once said, " we WILL shoot first - because if we don't we may not get a chance to shoot. Locked, Loaded, and READY.

I disagree about one thing that ya said, Joe - Be very scared, citizens of Salisbury. NO. Call to arms, citizens of Salisbury. There needs to be the re-discovery of good old american way of stamping out the undesirables - shoot them, and leave the bodies where they can be found. And then display them on a slab, and since the media is so damn up for bringing it UP FRONT - tell everyone which slimeball they found, and just how they got it. Cock the hammer, people, and if you see someone doing as they shouldn't, and they're 100% wrong, leave 'em right FCKG there. That's all.

Happyhour-you have a good point but the problem is that while the thugs battle each other, innocent people get caught in the line of fire.
I still cant believe SPD ex chief wants to play Sheriff after the mess he made of Salisbury/

I couldn't believe that there were 3 pages of traffic stops within 24 hours, and that's with a population of 50,000 people. That's ridiculous--200 traffic stops in one day? The city should buy out the landlords in the high crime areas (by Bennett Middle), knock down the houses, and build a park. The fact that there are registered sex offenders living within .1 mile from that school is disgraceful. Do something. It would probably cost the city less money to buy the neighborhood than to police it. I'm even willing to kick in some of my own money to make it happen.

Anon 6:09 I hear ya! I for one would like to see taht area cleaned up. Go down Roger Street from College Ave, and turn right on Carrolton Ave, 2nd house on right is always full of Bloods and they sell drugs right in the open. I have to ride down roger to get to my home. Hell one night, they were shooting craps beside the back of the house. SPD needs to patrol this area more than they are.

This is a perfect example of what the good ol boy network gets ya. The higher ups are only worried about themselves and their friends. Promote your friends, get what you want done and deny deny deny. Ive heard so many local ppl talk about how bad larger cities are with crime and yet you tell them about Salisbury's issues and they act as if you are lying to them. The first step to fixing any of the problems around here is actually admitting it. The lower shore has more child sex abuse cases than anywhere in the state, the crime rate here is horrible and jobs are nil as is the average wage. Many of the ppl committing these crimes are some of the local unemployable unproductive members of society that seem to be everywhere around here. The transient population in this area is high and this adds to the always growing shore drug problems.

WOOO-aaah! Imclain, ya hit it good!!! SPD, wico sheriffs are raising hell writing seat belt & traffic tickets, a large portion of advertising - billboards, you name it - "we're watching you criminals, you speeders & people who won't click it" - we're going to get you. Hell, the thug element knows, believe it - when local law enforcement is on their a$$es, and they know when they're not. Mike Lewis, you said "let's lock 'em up" when you ran for office. Get in gear and get after 'em. I know you can get it done. Leave the speeders be. I overheard an officer (i won't say which agency) say in a restaurant the other day if he caught someone at 63-64mph in a 55 he would- "nail their a$$." I thought, man whatta tuff hombre he must be. Then i turned to look at him. Barely wet behind his friggin' ears. Nail 'em, punk. Just don't mess with the druggies & murderers. Oh yeah. Crime is down 10%. It's okay. I learned to shoot in the proper place. And i won't wait for some punk wanna be tuff guy paper a$$ed cop like him to help. And that is not to impune the fine work put in by our other law enforcement people. Ya get a few bad in every pot. And by the way, thug punks, if you can read this - there ARE some of us who WILL shoot to kill. And it'll hurt when we do.
