Maryland Senate: Mikulski (D) 58%, Wargotz (R) 33%

A number of Republicans are challenging Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski, but again this election cycle it appears she has little to worry about.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Maryland finds Mikulski with a 25-point lead - 58% to 33% - over Eric Wargotz, a doctor and county commissioner who is perhaps the best known of her little-known challengers. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and seven percent (7%) are undecided.

In the only previous Rasmussen Reports survey of Mikulski's reelection bid, she earned 54% support pitted against an unnamed generic Republican candidate who picked up 36% of the vote.

Mikulski, who was first elected to the Senate in 1986, has been a voter favorite from the start, given Maryland's strong Democratic leanings. She was reelected in 2004 with 65% of the vote. The latest Rasmussen Reports Senate Balance of Power rankings place Maryland in the Solid Democrat category.

The incumbent holds a narrower lead among male voters but leads by better than two-to-one among women. Voters not affiliated with either major party favor Mikulski by a 53% to 28% margin.

If the people reelect her they deserve what they get. Higher taxes, more out of control spending, more liberal programs, more illegal immigrants and the list goes on and on. I'm getting to believe that Marylanders are really stupid for the most part.

Agreed 1:44 PM... I have been saying that myself... They love you complain yet they do nothing about it and then the ones who try, get shat on by the ones who are afraid or to lazy to stand up for themselves... Typical cycle which will never lose momentum...

FOR THOSE WHO VOTED FOR "Mikulski"... REMEMBER SHE VOTED FOR OBAMA BIN LADEN's HEALTH CARE BILL WHICH WE WILL SEE IN OUR TAXES THIS YEAR COMING SO NO BITCHING ABOUT THAT EITHER...

Interesting indeed. I agree with Anon 1:44. Enough complaining. Let's rally behind our lead candidate, Wargotz, and stop shooting at each other. These numbers and the analysis by Rasmussen have convinced me to support Dr. Wargotz. I just don't believe an attorney, dentist, or businessman have as likely a shot to make up the ground we nee someone to take in order to be competitive. I found the analysis regarding women voters especially interesting as they may be a key to this race. I did find that Dr. wargotz has a background of work in womens health issues, cancer and other. I believe if he uses those credentials wisely that he can sing a significant component of women votes his way. I was very impressed that he described "new" entities in medicine and his cancer work is impressive, particularly in women's disease.
No other candidate in this race has this unique background in womens health or a record of fiscal conservatism. Fascinating.

Viable Rep candidates would not try to take her on.

Wargotz is a RINO, and MD deserves someone better than this. But we'll just have to wait another 6.
