FTC To Take A Closer Look At Debtors Being Thrown In Jail

It's not a crime to owe money, and debtors prisons have been abolished -- but that doesn't mean that people are not being routinely arrested and put in jail for failing to pay debts. A few weeks ago the Minneapolis Star-Tribune published an investigative piece about arrest warrants being issued for people with less than $100 in debt, many of whom didn't even know that a collector had taken legal action against them. Now, following a letter by Sen. Al Franken (noted hater of the Comcast, NBC merger), the FTC has agreed to look into the issue.

Mmmmmmm , makes you wonder , rob a person or a business get off on probation cause the jails are too crowded , don't pay your bill and get thrown in jail. I'm glad to see we have such good judgement , the lawyers have got this country messed up.

People that don't pay for what they take SHOULD be thrown in jail!

They are not thrown in jail for debt. If you read the article, they are jailed for missing a court date.

I agree with An5:23 you would be upset if you did work or sold an item and you were not paid.

5:23
Where did the borrowed money come from?
Was it printed by the Federal Reserve? Was there any money to lend? Did the person promise to pay? When?

So many questions. So few people to answer.

FIAT MONEY

Educate yourself!

Stop being a stupid person.

not only that but most employers now routinely run credit checks on applicants too weed out potential theft risks and debt taken into consideration as a behavior flaw

Honestly, I am shocked that a democrat sent the letter and not a republican.

6:22 Semantics. Being jailed for missing a court date for a debt of less than $100 is tantamount to being jailed for the debt. Ever hear of "zombie" debt? If not, then look it up and come back and apologize. If you DO know what it is then you should be ashamed of that inane comment. How many hard-working Americans have had their health insurance cancelled? Been laid off and are losing their home? Been divorced, and left with the kids? And on and on and on....Our economy is in shambles and its OKAY with YOU if Ms Johnson goes to jail because she chose to buy food for the kids and pay the rent instead of sending Netflix their $68? or Paying the pediatrician $90 for her last doctor visit? I understand there are many people out there who have NEVER had to suffer or sacrifice because of inheritance or "all your hard work", but it life does take tragic turns....
