The GEO Group Awarded Bureau of Prisons Contract for the Continued Management of the Rivers Correctional Institution in Winton, North Carolina
BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The GEO Group (NYSE:GEO - News) (“GEO”) announced today that it has been awarded a contract by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (“BOP”) for the continued management of the company-owned Rivers Correctional Institution (the “Facility”) located in Winton, North Carolina.
The new contract will have a term of ten years, inclusive of renewal options. Under the terms of the new contract, the Facility will house up to 1,450 BOP inmates. At the 90 percent occupancy guaranteed level, or 1,135 beds, the new contract is expected to generate annual revenues of approximately $34.0 million.

Somerset County doesn't deserve to have a facility like that in place. Until all the corruption and bs is cleared up nothing good should happen to them. they got what they derserved - nothing. Damn glad I live in Wicomico. Just compare our sheriff to yours.....end of argument

The proposed site was actually in the County, about a mile south of town on Rt. 13, opposite Mountaire.

It took the feds a year to make this decision, so is it really surprising they have not done much in the Gulf oil pollution problem yet?

Why should the money be spent on a new facility in Somerset when there was already a facility in NC in place but needed a new contract signed. I am sorry to see the jobs lost. BUT how many counties do you think would change the zoning for the landowner, who put a stipulation in the zoning plan that it would revert back to the old zoning IF the prison deal fell through. Appears the land will be reverted back now.
I believe the majority of the counties are alike now with corruption and the you grease my hand attitude. So lets compare Sheriffs 1:33 - they both are short.

Go back under your rock. The owner was prudent to have a kick-out if the feds didn't select the site. Nothing unusual under the circumstances or illegal.

1:34: "300 jobs lost." No jobs were lost. You cannot lose what you did not have.
You people that say 300 jobs lost, I ask you how can you lose something that you never had? Fact is Somerset doesn't even have 300 people that would qualify to work at a federal prison. Any local that wants a job in a jail and is qualified can get a job at ECI. If Somerset had got this prison they would have had to import employees just like the have had to do at ECI. I'm glad Somerset was rejected.
Somerset is notorious for it's corruption 9:04. It's run by family for gods sake. Sort of reminds one of the mafia doesn't it? The states attorney down there never brings charges against any of her political croonies. They really need change but not a new prison.
Economic development committee fails again. Total waste of money and should be eliminated. They do nothing for the county. Just how many jobs did Somerset county lose late year?
