And So It Begins

"On the 9th of this month we saw a coyote in our backyard on S. Tourmaline Dr. I called the Humane Society and they told me to call Sheriff's Office, they in turn told me to call ABC. I did and spoke with Mark Leggett."

Who didn't know this was going to happen. No sooner did we receive information that the Humane Society was going to pass off certain calls to the Sheriff's Office, the buck is being passed off to other organizations.

The end result, NOTHING. There is now a wild coyote, (yes, they are known to be in this area) roaming the Rockawalkin area. Someone needs to trap this animal and relocate it to an area in which it can survive in the WILD.

The Humane Society doesn't handle wildlife.

Time to wake up, and face some hard truths. There are reasons that the coyote is reoccupying it's former territory. First there is food (road kill, poultry farms, deer, and free roaming cats). According the the Delaware Natural Resources biologists, the new coyote is in reality a wolf/coyote hybrid. Second, they are smart, and hard to trap. Third, they are secretive, and have been on the Eastern Shore for years. If you see one it is either very hungry, or young and inexperienced. Finally there is no WILD to relocate them to, we have moved into its home. Home owners in other parts of the country co-exist with all types of wild animals. Just be smarter, don't leave food scrapes out, and keep your cats inside.

Don't you just love em?

Trapping animals is not in a police officers job description. In the county, the humane society is responsible for animal calls, whereas in the city SPD has their own animal control.

Wild or Tame the Humane Society here is worthless! Same law applies here as your home. You feel threatened Shoot the critter!

Are you aware that the Humane Society's budget has been cut? They are doing the best they can.

First of all, The humane society is not a government office, it is a private tax exempt organization. It does receive some money from your taxes to do certain jobs, but thats it. If you would like them to do more, Support them, send them some more money.: http://www.wicomicohumane.org/Membership-Form.pdf

Don't want to. Don't complain.

Why would you call anyone just because you saw a wild animal? I see wild animals every day but I don't call and report it. If that wild animal is threatening you or your property you can either shoot it yourself or call the WCSD to come shoot it. This issue has nothing to do with "budget cuts".

Also, where exactly would this "in the WILD" be located?

There are coyotes in the wild in every State of the Union except Hawaii. As we encroach on their habitat, they have to make adjustments to survive.

Somerset county should contract out their animal control to other counties that need help. Somerset has a full staff of uniformed animal control officers with nothing to do but sit around and play games on the computer. Somerset should either contract them out where they are needed are get rid of most of them. Somerset does not have much of a animal control problem because it is a small county.

Oh my god, what to do. What do you think people did for years and years before you could call big brother to take care of it for you. I bet you call the police to tell your neighbor the music is too loud or one of their friends parked their car in front of your house.

Go get a trap and trap it yourself, shot it, move. Your choice.

Take care of this minor problem yourself. It's no big deal! We don't need to pay a bunch of people to take care of these minor problems. I agree with 11:08 about too many animal control officers in that county. It's a total waste of money and they flat out refuse to handle anything except dogs. They should be called dog control, not animal control. Wicomico county is fortunate not to have a so called animal control. Does anyone really want to pay more taxes for yet another so called SERVICE.

There is also one living along Gordy Mill road a little east of Delmar. Saw it last week.

Survive in the WILD??? Looks like its doing that right now, and seemingly rather well....they were here before YOU were....too bad the wild animals don't have some commission or society they can join to get rid of the bothersome humans....thats a joke, for all you hunters...

I saw a couple packs of coyotes on two different occasions in the Pocomoke Forest area. I'd be more worried about the people that live out there than the coyotes!

I am sorry to bother you all
, but I didn't know we had them here, I was only concerned about walkers and children.

i love it - if something bothers you just shoot it - what a concept
WE are taking their land, WE are creating the problem
can't we just get along
I'd take a dozen coyotes to some of the 2-legged supposive intelligent humans any day
At least the coyotes do what they do and how they do it to survive - what about us - eh - I don't like it - just shoot them
I'm certainly glad we are the "intelligent" species

Take your gun, which you do own right? (you do have a right to own one in case you forgot) and shoot the coyote, end of story.

I saw 2 killed this year during deer season in the pocomoke area.

I would suggest a critter company too if you arent comfortable using a humane trap to release it or shooting it.If it appears to be rabid, and someone does not respond you HAVE to shoot it.
