The Gas Tax Is Back

The Liberals in Congress believe that if gas costs more you'll drive less. That's why they want to increase the gas tax. All in the name of saving the environment while destroying the economy.

And so tomorrow, Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) will unveil their new energy tax, which may include a new tax on gasoline, diesel, and other transportation fuels.

They will say, however, that it is not a gasoline tax because it doesn't raise the specific Federal Gasoline Excise Tax, currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon. But their proposal, according to multiple credible reports, is actually a tax imposed on top of the existing Federal Gasoline Excise Tax.

And Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who helped craft this new gas tax, admitted the higher costs for energy companies "will be passed on" to motorists at the pump.

At American Solutions, we believe that if Americans pay more for something because of a government requirement, it's a tax. It's little wonder why a recent American Solutions poll found that 71% of Americans oppose a new gasoline tax.

We're not sure how much the new tax will raise gasoline prices. Researchers at Harvard University, however, recently determined that President Obama's ideal energy policy could lead to $7 per gallon gasoline.

In addition to potentially increasing the price of gasoline and diesel, the Kerry-Lieberman energy tax will increase the cost of energy for all American families. And the independent Congressional Budget Office recently determined that a new energy tax will kill jobs and reduce American productivity.

We believe raising taxes and killing more jobs is the wrong solution for America's 9.9% unemployment rate. We plan to fight this devastating legislation from day one, and we hope you will join us.

After the bill is introduced tomorrow, we will follow up with details about the bill and ways you can help.

Your friend,
Newt Gingrich

If you want to save money and laugh at the oil companies, buy a scooter and only drive your car during cold/rainy weather. If more people had bikes and scooters gas prices would fall and stay low.

I think you've had too much Kool-Aid

Tell you what. I'll drive my Tahoe and you ride your bike!

We will never learn with out higher gas prices. Too much head in the sand, as long as it is cheap we will continue to waste.

now wouldnt that be something. I dont think that would happen. It will just like the power companies raising rates to the people that conserve. If you dont use that much the oil companies will have to raise the price even more to make up for what they arent making

"If more people had bikes and scooters gas prices would fall and stay low."

They would not and history has proven this. Use less, decrease revenue, lower profits. What to do then? Raise price of your product. Investors want GROWTH (including your pension plan administrator).

What a simplistic comment. It may prove a little difficult to go to a ballgame, go shopping or to a movie with your wife and two kids in a bicycle or scooter. Also it is illegal to ride either on a controlled access highway like rt . 13 or 50 where the speed limit is 55 or higher,

ya we can laugh at them just like the power company they are going to charge more because we use less

If fuel goes to $7 a gallon the economy will fold.
Look at the prices to haul produce or any product to the grocery store.
Fuel is only $3 dollars a gallon and look at the prices.
Well you rich people will be ok , but the rest of us aint gonna make it.
Yes do like 5: 10 post , do something about it,quit driving unless you have to.
Except for the very rich , they got it and are not going to help anyone except themselves.

The liberals and their simplistic fix's " ride a bike" give me a break I guess it's no wonder when their leader says proper tire inflation is the key to lowering oil prices !

5:10 it's a good suggestion but it will not work, many European countries use scooters and bikes yet their gas is even more expensive than here. Also the distances that we have to travel are too long for scooters and small bikes to handle - same with highways.
The reason so many people drive here is due to lack of good public transportation system. If you look at London, Paris or even NY, you don't really need a car there. Now here I'd rather pay $7 per gallon than get on the Baltimore City bus.

funny how you guys tout supply and demand principles when you claim "drill baby drill" but when someone mentions lowering demand, you jump all over him/her.

7:43, the pres. never said "tire inflation was the key". He quoted a dept. of energy report that showed that a simple step such as proper inflation can have a significant impact on demand (from a cost-benefit ratio perspective. Facts are terrible little things when they get in the way of your ideaology. I don't expect the Rush Limbaugh kool-aidaholics to understand that though.

my household has already cut back to the bare minimum on travel, we don't get to see our families due to the distance and our grandchildren are growing up without us.
if folks would remember when it is election time things could be turned around, but voters have their heads in the sand and keep voting the same morons in.
with adults with short memories you can understand what is happening with the younger generation. so very sad
