Running for Safety
Newark, DE - Since 2005 the Ronnie Williams Foundation has presented "Trooper Ron's Run" a 5k run/walk that has grown into a community safety event.

The event is held at Glasgow Park in Newark. This location with its open spaces and central location, provided an opportunity to invite police agencies, fire departments and safety related organizations to set-up displays and do demonstrations. "The park is an ideal site for this type of event" said Jennifer Hawkins, Executive Director of the foundation. "The park is easily accessible and has plenty of green space for us to utilize".

Among the activities offered at the event, there is kids fun run, police K9 demonstrations, emergency vehicle displays and safety resources. Parents can interact with emergency workers getting the latest safety resources and information. Food is provided by Chick-Fil-A of Bear and race sponsors will also be on hand to provide give-aways. Councilman Dave Tackett stated, "Glasgow Park was built in order that the citizens of the community would have a positive place to come together and interact with their neighbors. Having this great event in the park's upbeat setting will bring the people out for this outstanding cause".

Proceeds from the race benefit the Ronnie Williams Foundation, a nonprofit founded in memory of Cpl. Ronald Williams, Jr. Cpl. Williams was a 16 year veteran of the Delaware State Police. The foundation provides scholarships and support for law enforcement across Delaware. To date, the foundation has assisted Delaware State and Wilmington police with their community policing efforts and has given 15 scholarships to area students.

Hawkins added "This year we have the privilege of honoring a fallen hero, Georgetown police officer Chad Spicer. Officer Spicer was killed in the line of duty last year and the Foundation has established a scholarship in his memory. This will pass on Officer Spicer's lasting legacy to area high school students".

A portion of the run proceeds will go to the Officer Chad Spicer Heroes Scholarship, in addition to the other available scholarships.

"Trooper Ron's Run" will be held Saturday, May 1st at Glasgow Park. A pre-registration / safety night will be held at Chick-Fil-A on Rt 40 in Bear, Monday, April 26th from 5:30pm -8:30pm. There will be discounts and give-aways, along with police & fire personnel on hand.
