Lucky Star

Hi Joe,

I’m sure you don’t want to become a restaurant review site… but I just wanted to let you know you should warn your readers about how truly awful Lucky Star is. I’ve eaten plenty of places in my 33 years, and must say it is the worst Asian restaurant I’ve ever been too. The office got carryout and it was a HUGE JOKE. The portions are beyond ridiculously tiny. It would be pushing it to charge $1.99 for the lunch specials and they were $6.25! The “entrée” came in the smallest rice takeout container you’ve ever seen, along with the same size container of rice and an eggroll. Sure if it were quality maybe you could charge, but the food just was not good and all ended up in the trash. The pepper steak was fine, that was it. We also got a “dinner sized” chicken and broccoli and it smelled and tasted horribly of fish and was inedible. We got a “dinner sized” lemon chicken, and it’s supposed to be a large piece of breaded chicken and it was like it was made in advance (at least a week ago) and then MICROWAVED, which obviously you can microwave a tempura battered piece of chicken, it was too tough to even chew! (It didn’t taste like fish, it just tasted like ROTTEN chicken.) This place is a total rip-off, normally I would just chalk it up to experience and not go back, but I felt compelled to warn your readers about our miserable lunch. We’re having to send someone out again to go buy lunch from somewhere else. Anyone in Fruitland do yourself a favor and go to Hunan Palace instead, where the food is truly fresh and delicious. (they aren’t exactly the cheapest place, but I’ve never ever had a bad meal there).

Thanks,

Cliff

A groups of friends and I went to Lucky Star the other day and we had a great meal. Portions were fine. The sushi was awesome and I've never seen a cleaner restaurant. Everything was stainless steel.

Not sure who "Cliff" is and what his agenda is, but be aware that the owner of Lucky Star WAS the head chef for Hunan Palace for years and when he went out on his own with Lucky Star his uncle, the owner of Hunan Palace, was very upset. The whole "Cliff" review smells like a a set up job.

Agreed!! Had dinner there last night and the service was terrible!! The food was only so-so. The dish I ordered was not as expected and found in most Chinese restaurants. The soup was barely warm, not hot by any means. The food also not hot, however it was warm but was not able to stay that way thruough dinner. All in all, I'd recommend another Chinese restaurant, maybe the new #1 Chinese Buffet which is wonderful. The food there is always hot tasty and quick and if you don't want what is on the buffet you can order off their full menu. And no.. I don't work for the buffet or any other restaurant.

My best friend and I went there for lunch yesterday. It was 18 dollars for the two of us and we each got three sushi rolls. It came with tea and miso soup. It's really 10.95 for 3 rolls - not a bad deal, but they are doing 30% off through today for their grand opening. It's not the best sushi (having eaten it in Philly, DC, Baltimore, some of the nicer sushi places here in town and of course my favorite Stingray in Rehoboth) but it's not bad either. Our waiter wasn't the best - at all, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt seeing as they just opened. I'd probably go back, but would prefer all you can eat at Dadimabang for 14.95 at lunch. Much nicer selection of rolls.

In Fruitland I get my quick to go food at Flannery's on Camden Ave. Its always fresh hot and tasty. Try it, and I have never been disapointed...

Had lunch there yesterday- and we thought it was delicious! It has a great atmosphere, the food was filling and the sushi rolls were very good. Go and judge for yourself- it will be worth the experience.

We got carryout from Lucky Star last night-- it was OK. Nothing to write home about.
Give them time, though.. they were training lots of new people.
Try them again in a few weeks or a month, then make the call about how good/bad they are. It takes a little time for a new business (especially a restaurant) to get their ducks in a row.

Had dinner there last night with six friends. everyone thought it was great. Our service was good, not great, expected as much on opening week at 30% off.
Sushi was great! Chef very busy...
The conbination dinners with egg roll and soup were good value. Food was good, not much different from others. Sesame chicken probably the best dish as we shared.

Had dinner there last night and it was good, way better taste in the chinese food than Hunan and we have been eating at Hunan for years, also the sushi was better prepared and tasted better than Hunan, Hunan has good sushi for years up until about 6 months ago and it has taken a dive. I recommend Lucky Star over Hunan, Hunan has never had good chinese food anyway. The only negative i had at Lucky Star and i think it is because it is their first week was the wait time to get our food, other than that it was great.

Had lunch there yesterday and some of these reviews are very accurate as it was good but not the best by far. Now all I ate was sushi and did not get an entree. I'll go back eventually but first impressions are a lasting one especially in this town with a hundred restaurants to choose from.

Had lunch there yesterday, and thought the kung pao chicken was quite good. At about five bucks, including rice and egg roll, it was also good value.

Was it the best Chinese food I've ever tasted? No, but no place in Salisbury is going to win that title. Most Americanized Chinese food is crap -- and far from what you'd actually eat in China.

Tried it...liked it...but I still miss Bejing Restaurant!

Me and my best friend went there last night for dinner and had terrible service. We were seated and didnt get our drinks until about 15 minutes later and then didnt take our order until about 30 minutes of waiting. Once we did get our food the waiter was not very friendly or professional. The food was ok but I have had better. Overall I was not impressed.

I know we are talking about Salisbury, but if you live or work in Berlin area the Chinese carry out in Food Lion shopping center is awesome. I can't think of the name of it, but we've never been disappointed there (Maybe somebody can chime in with the name). The food is always hot, fresh, large portions and awesome. I also agree that Hunan Palace is a good place to eat as well.

Yesterday I had a take-out order of pepper steak for lunch and it was delicious and more than enough for both my wife and me...I plan to go back again TODAY.

The place is clean, the people friendly and they speak English.

Wow! A LOT of people ate at Lucky Star yesterday! Or do they all just read and comment on SBYNEWS Blog? ???? Hmm....
I heard that Lucky Star is good. We are going to try it. Although, no place around here has been able to beat my favorite : Dadamibang in the Clairmont Shopping Center! We LOVE their all you can eat lunch buffet! FRESH FISH!
Any restaurant that has both Chinese and Asian cuisine usually suffers on one.
As far as Hunan! They are dirty and disgusting (cleanliness wise)! Sushi is not fresh. Had fried bananas with my sons one night and they had wrapped the bananas in SUB ROLLS and fried! It was AWFUL!

anonymous 11:56, Salisbury News has been the only place to publicize their opening. I also believe comments alone from so many that read it here and then went there should also answer, yes, that is why they have been so busy.

Now, what's cool about that. Salisbury News did NOT charge them to promote their opening and we're glad to be a part of their Grand Opening success. It's ALL a part of giving back.

That's cool Joe!

A girlfriend of mine dates an Orkin man. I'd never recommend eating at Hunan after speaking with him.

My family has had take out from lucky star twice since they opened. I have talked with the hostess and the owner both were very polite. the hostess always has a smile on her face. everything we have ordered has been delicious the portions are very generous. I am looking forward to going back with friends to have sushi. I have always liked hunan but the cleanliness has always been a concern to me. after the previous comment about orkin I will not go back

We went there Tuesday night. The service was a little slow, but I could tell the guy that waited on us was fairly new. No big deal. The food was pretty good, they are in the process of getting a liquor license I think. Like most said, the food was good, not the best, but I would definetely go back. The 30% off they are offering right now is hard to beat. I had 3 sushi rolls, and my wife had an entree. My daughter had a sushi roll and an eggroll (she is 8, suprised the heck out of me). The bill was in the mid 30's. Well worth it for an evening out with the family. The only thing I would suggest is to dim the lights just a little. The backs on the booths are low, and there is really no privacy from people sitting behind or in front of you. (I may just be weird like that)

Sounds like "Cliff" is a friend of Hunan Palace. Salisbury and Fruitland are big enough for both places.

I went there today and it was good. Even brought home leftovers. I do the same when I go to Hunan's. I usually get Beef & Broccoli. To me, it taste the same at both places.

Grow up "Cliff" if this continues Hunan will lose me as a customer. I know they aren't happy about the competition. Get over it!

i will not get food from there again, nothing at all like hunan. i thought it would be similar because of the connection. the sushi roll was ok but the veggie fried rice had little flavor and was very oily. i know its fried but never had 'greasy' fried rice before

Joe,

After reading all the posts about Lucky Star, my boyfriend and I went and tried it out tonight. Upon arrival we both commented on how clean and modern the restaurant was. It was very neat and organized and very clean.
However, the waiter we had spoke very little english, and did not ask us for our drink order until 15 minutes after being there. Mind you there was only 2 other tables occupied in the restaurant. After ordering, the appetizers we had were very good. I ordered sushi and my boyfriend order General Tso's chicken. The sushi I feel was no different than Hunan's, matter a fact the menu was pretty much the exact same rolls you can get at Hunan. My boyfriend however was not at all impressed with the general tso's chicken. It was a very large portion but the rice was dry and the chicken was way to sweet. Yes, I would eat there again but never again as my first choice. I feel that the best place for sushi in Salisbury is by far Sushi De Kanpuai downtown. I would recommend that restaurant to anyone.
