James M. Bennett High

A team of outstanding students from James M. Bennett High School defeated teams from Institute of Notre Dame of Baltimore and Liberty High School of Eldersburg, on IT'S ACADEMIC, the nation's foremost high school quiz program. The match will be aired Saturday, March 6, at 10 a.m. on WJZ, Channel 13.

In honor of the team and the school, through Sunday It's Academic sponsor Giant Food will be featuring a special "James M. Bennett High School Garden Tuna Salad."

The James M. Bennett team consists of Samim Manizade, Carter Tilghman, and Ethan Kahn. Their faculty coach is Phil Bock. The team will return later this season for a playoff match with two other first-round winners.

IT'S ACADEMIC is sponsored by Giant Food and Morgan State University. Host of the program is David Zahren.

Parenting Matters: Raising Successful Children
Wor-Wic Community College

Looking for tips on how to help your children succeed academically and socially – in school and in the community? Join the MD PIRC and the Eastern Shore Regional Advisory Committee for an exciting, wonderful and free event for parents and family members (see flyer).

The Eastern Shore’s second Parenting Matters: Raising Successful Children conference will be held from 8:15 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Child care, programming for young people, and breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost.

Special features of the conference include: ‘Raising Successful Learners in Elementary School’ workshop led by Wicomico Teachers of the Year Debbie Wilkins and Susan Cullen; One Stop Job Market Mobile Van; and Paying for College seminar.

In addition, there will be door prizes for families, a Youth Leadership Academy with fun learning activities for youth (ages 6-14), Spanish language interpreters for parents, and special music for the opening session by Wicomico County’s very own band -- The Edgeucators.

Remember, the conference is free (with breakfast, lunch, child care, youth activities). But registration is required (for seminars, childcare, and the youth leadership academy). To register, click on:

Congrats to the It's Academic Team! Mr. Bock is a great teacher, both in the classroom and as as adviser for this team.
It's nice to hear about some of the positive academics in our county schools...and very telling that there are no comments about it.
