Police Use Pepper Spray, Horses In Clash With Students On Route 1

Thousands clamor downtown in first riot in four years

For the first time in a college generation, university students took to Route 1, took down street signs and rioted.

At 11:07 p.m., Greivis Vazquez hit a free throw to clinch the Terrapins’ first victory Duke after six consecutive losses in the series. At 11:10 p.m., rancorous, cheering students bellowing, “F--- Duke,” from downtown bars poured outside in a demonstration that built slowly from streetside shouting to the point where horse-mounted police in full riot gear could not clear Route 1 in a single sweep through the street.

See The Diamondback's video coverage of the riot.

There are certainly ways to celebrate with out destroying property. Comments on the article itself were that they were just students and felt that this would be their last chance to act like this. What BS! I have always felt that there should be respect for authority and when the police came in and ordered the crowd to disperse they should have realized that there actions were childish and dispersed. Not sure about you, but when someone on a big horse, armed to the teeth tells me to do something, I am going to do it. I remember Kent State and as far as I am concerned, it was Them 2 Us 0. When there is looting, riots, etc during disasters, the governing body should let it be known, by every media possible, that participants in these actions will be shot!!! Time to realize that in order to make an omelet you have to break a few eggs. May sound drastic but this country and it's morals are going down the tube. jackkcharl@aol.com
