It's a variation of the old casting out nines that accountants used to use before calculators and computers (my dad, 88 now, was one and taught it to me when I was a kid).

It wouldn't matter if your favorite number was 3,271 you'd still end up with 9 (with larger numbers you have to keep adding the digits until you ended up with a single digit). It even works if you favorite number is zero ;)
