Concerning Dog In These Temperatures

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I remember reading a post of yours that said it is illegal to have animals in weather they are not accustomed to, and that there is a law stating the owner is responsible for getting them inside.......etc...

I called the sheriff's dept this morning referencing a dog on the corner of fire tower and nanticoke rds., and they said to call the humane society. The lady I spoke to told me they can't do anything, and to call the humane society. I called the humane society, and I spoke to a woman, I explained to her yes this animal does have an igloo and a 'bucket' of water. Frozen, I have no clue... She said there is nothing they can do as long as they have shelter, food and water....

I mentioned to her about the freezing temperatures and the animal not being accustomed to these cold times, and she let me know that the law I was speaking about got shut down a few years ago, and there is nothing they could do about it....

I am worried for this animal and would like to see it rescued.....

Am I wrong saying that I read your post saying to call the sheriff's dept, and they would help?

Thank You .......

about the only dog that can't take these temps are chiwawas (spelt wrong) most dogs are just fine in these temps. bythe way have you looked under the bridges in salisbury, if you really want to help someone they might be able to use your concern, otherwise,GET A LIFE

Why not post the name and address of the owner, along with a picture of their home, and shame them into taking care of their animals!

J Dawg, though very sad the people under the bridge are self inflicted victims but the dogs never had a choice.

I also was concerned recently about a dog in my area. This poor dog was out all day Saturday durning the storm. I'm not sure where it is exactly but i could just hear him yelping and barking. So i called the Humane Society. They listed their hours Mon.-Sat. 9-5. Well it was Sat. and it was around 2:00 in the afternoon and guess what? They were closed for the day! What do you do then?

not always are the ones under the bridge self inflicted. some have lost jobs and homes. have some compassion for people too

No reason why we can't care about both humans and animals. I think it's great that you're concerned and want to help.

It to cold for any person or animal to be outside. The last snow we had before this. My husband was working. He does pick up for a doctors office. The house next to the pick up.Had puppies outside in the snow with no food or dog house. He called Animal Control and they came and took them. It's just breaks my heart to see this happen.

Not all people under bridges are self inflicted. In most cases, it is mental issues that they are born with.

If you want to see it rescued, Go rescue it and stop blaming everyone else for not doing anything.

2:57, some homeless do not want a change, but the majority do. For many, it is not self-inflicted.

Biggest group of homeless? Veterans.

2:54 has a very good idea, put a picture of the house, the dog, and the address on here, then I bet they would get the dog inside.

What was the breed?

I have a black lab and a Timber wolf mix... and he refuses to come in the house we have to fight and drag him in the house when I leave during the day.... ohhh hes so mad at us aall the time. he even destroys my house during the day ( we assume its becasue he is getting back at us for bringing him in) But he rolls in the snow and eats it and just loves life while he is out there..... So I think people on here should really mind there business instead of blasting someone that they know nothing about IMHO

Some of you people are so smart alecky and snide. We can help both animals and people; when we find the opportunity, one at a time. Be nice or shut up!

3:34, I can normally tolerate mispellings, shortened "internet slang" and a lack of capitalization in internet posts but I could barely even read your post. Please, do yourself a favor and take an English 101 class at Wor-Wic. They will educate you on very complicated English topics like putting a space after a period, sentence fragments and the proper use of "it" and "it's".

Thank you, my brain is now numb.

What is wrong with these people at the Humane Society??? Is Ms Lugo on an extended vacation, & won't get back till Spring??? She was on the Committee who made these laws to protect these animals! It is against the Law in Wicomico Cty to keep a dog outside in freezing weather even if it has a house, food & water---when they are an animal not acclimated to the below freezing temperatures. What is the Problem?? What kind of people are you out there that want to keep a dog of this description in the Laws outside in this severe weather??? You know good & well if a person can freeze to death----so can an animal----I don't care who you are out there that think the bigger furry ones can withstand it!!! It's like my Vet said when I ask if it bothered my Lab to walk on the Snow & Ice.-----"How would it feel to you without shoes to protect your feet?----The same goes for the animals that go for us----They hurt, & feel just as we do.

Somebody needs to find out what is going on at the Humane Society---the people are Not being told the truth when they are told there is nothing the HS can do!!!!! That has been their answer for the past many years-----It is an Untruth!!! Could it be they don't want to do their jobs----Well, if so-----think there are plenty of people out there that need a job. Wicomico County Council-----where do you stand in all this----and who hires the people to run the Humane Society? This is disgusting to say the least!

what in the heck did anmimals do before we started bringing them into our homes when it gets cold. I love animals also but I believe that the man up above gave them what they need to survive.

Have a heart folks, animals have feelings just as we do. I ONCE had a "friend" who left her dog out in this kind of weather and it got so cold overnight that it climbed into a trashcan and froze to death. Please people unless your dogs are used for outside protection let them inside. I will never understand people who buy animals just to keep them penned up outside and spend no time or maybe 5 minutes with them a day. Why the &%** would you have or want a "pet" if u do that??????

Animal control officers do work on the weekends. If you can't get through to one, the Salisbury Police also have an animal control officer. However, do not waste their time. Some dogs have no business being out in the cold, but a lot of dogs are fine in cold weather and actually prefer the cold. That being said, if they are outside, they must have a good shelter, food and water. The call made to the humane society in this post is ridiculous and more than likely a waste of the Humane Society's time. The reader admitted that the dog had an igloo and a bucket of water. I personally have a large breed dog that loves the cold weather and is in heaven with all of this snow. She has an igloo, but prefers to lay out in the snow and sunshine. She would be miserable and hot if I brought her into the house. Let the Humane Society deal with the animals that need them.

I agree with 4:05;

I am very bothered by the site of homeless here in SBY as well as everywhere else. I am on Northwood Drive often, at this time of year with no foliage on the trees you can look into the woods to see tents set up and once in a while a white male or two either entering or leaving the woods. These men are in their 50's to 60's I would guess, Vietnam vets??? Also on the exit ramp of 13 business to the bypass south near the Centre in the woods on the right tents are visible. I have always thought that these individuals have most likely served our country and are victims of some type of military PTSD or something and we as a city, county, state and country allow those who have served our country to be in this position. I am a big fan of giving these type of people (esp veterans) assistance instead of the brown baggers walking to the mailbox in a robe and flip flops that are perfectly capable of getting a job but wont because the gov't will give them their fortune and that is a helluva lot easier than looking for a job or working. I know this post was about the animal but 4:05 makes a point that I absolutely agree with!

Unfortunately, we have as a society overbred and over compensated our 4-legged children.
There are many that regardless of the breed can not cope with the weather conditions as they have been.
Common sense dictates that everyone needs to be somewhere out of the wind on a dry base with clean water and food
But wait - common sense hardly exists any more
I too am disgusted with people that buy a dog to chain it outside - I guess somewhat like a lawn ornament
Normally, when a dog is purchased it is for protection and company - neither of which can be accomplished if they are outside and you are inside.
Dogs are gotten many times for the wrong reason and no forethought
I worked on the Dog Ordinance, and I am saddened that all the time and effort put in by these individuals seems to have gone to the wayside - the final draft was torn apart/deleted/changed/altered to make sure that they didn't lose the "votes" for the next term
If the council was the final deciding party - they should have written them theirselves
This is not the first time that the voice of the few were put before others
How can you institute changes, if you are not willing to stand behind them and support them - or willing to fund them
I guess we are back to "do what I say, not what I do"
I love the idea of taking pictures and submitting them - not to do so viciously but maybe a wake up call?
Some of the other readers were correct - there are some dogs that absolutely love this weather and belong in this weather - but even they too - when the fun is done want to have the little small creature comforts - water/food and a dry non-drafty place to sleep.

11:11 am Well said. I am sure you wonder why you even bothered to work so diligently on the Dog Laws after the Council tore them apart as they did! Any one would.

They did however, allow some better laws that were proposed
to be passed----but were quite reserved to hold back on ones that should have been allowed.

Let the HS take care of the animals that they should!!! What kind of a statement is that----They don't, & aren't going to my friend----that has been known for a long time now in this town by many.

County Council sucks!!!! They really don't care what is going on there or else they would bring this to public attention as to what the HS is obligated by County Laws to do to protect the animals who are owned by irresponsible people! That is the key phrase---"Irresponsible People!"

Bet they're acclimated to the cold, let's tie them all outside in this approaching Snow Storm----maybe, just maybe there would be results!
