Security For 9/11 Trials In NYC Will Cost More Than $400M

New York City projects it will cost more than $400 million to provide security if the pre-trial preparation and trial of the suspects in the Sept. 11 terror attacks takes two years, which insiders say is virtually certain, according to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

It will cost another $206 million annually if the trial runs beyond two years, which some fear is possible, the mayor's office estimates.

In a letter to the director of the federal Office of Management and Budget supporting Sen. Charles Schumer's proposal for federal reimbursement, Bloomberg projected a first year security price tag of $216 million and an ongoing annual cost of $206 million. "The City of New York's financial resources are in short supply," Bloomberg wrote. "Thus securing the trial will require us to pull existing personnel from crime prevention resources from around the city." The civilian trial of the Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and five other suspects in the attacks that killed nearly 2,750 civilians will take place in a Manhattan federal courthouse just blocks from where the towers stood.

Editors Note: $200 M, $400 Million, will someone in the Press make up their mind please!

It is disturbing to read the comments from locals about killing or hanging SUSPECTS of a crime.

Some people believe everything they are told by the main stream media.

This is called MIND CONTROL. You need to THINK about why you believe what you believe.

If Bill O'reilly says the guy is a terrorist, then the guy should be killed.

If Chris Matthews says the guy is guilty then he should be killed.

These people know who is bad and who is good. There is no chance that our CIA or Israel's MOSSAD have tricked this guy into doing something stupid.

There are no hidden agendas. Our government is good and always tells us the truth. No innocent people are ever accused of crimes.

This isn't Democrats wasting money. This is greedy lawyers! How the heck can a trial cost that much money. This is rediculous..you would think it would cost more to house and feed them all of this time then to convict them of something that we know they did.

Hello talking about brainwashing...How the heck do you think Obama got elected in the first place? Maybe the MSM, Oprah, The View, Letterman, and the list goes on and on. All we need to do to beat the democrats the next election is to cut off the Kool-Aid supply lines.

". . . to convict them of something we know they did."

Maybe you mis-spoke or rather, mis-typed?

You didn't really mean that - did you?

Innocent until proven guilty?

Just kill'em and save the money.

Can we get the trials moved to Salisbury? Think what it could do to the economy.

11:15 This is Obama deciding to give these assassins a trial in America instead of trying them as war criminals of which they are.

Was the Oklahoma City bombing an act of war? Was Waco an act of war? Was Ruby Ridge an act of war? I mean really... what's the difference? Some f'ing nutjob decides to blow something up. period. The rest is simply people hating America and claiming other's actions as their own. Is that really war? Who exactly have we declared war upon? The terrorists? Who are they?

These people have known ties to Al-Qaeda which make them enemies of the state thus hence a war crime.

Ted,
Al Qaeda is a creation of the CIA. Osama Bin Laden worked was trained and paid by the CIA to fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

This whole problem could be solved for $.50

The cost of one .223 round.

Anon 2:40 regardless of the past history and origin they are anti-American now. They proclaimed war on America and we proclaimed war on them which makes the attacks an act of war. It looks like you watched Charlie Wilson's War one too many times.

To 11:15 -- This damned trial will cost millions for security reasons alone! What a prime opportunity for terrorists to strike NYC again. Their "brothers" are going to be on trial in the heart of the City -- perfect time to drive a few car/truck bombs into town and get as close to the courthouse as possible. Oh, wait! Authorities will have to cordon off the streets to prevent such a thing. Now, won't that be fun for the people working downtown -- to say nothing of the inconvenience on local businesses. Then, you have the jurors to consider. Would YOU want to sit on such a jury knowing your life and the lives of your family members could easily be on the line? There will have to be tight security offered to everyone involved in this trial. With every faction of this idiotic move, the price goes up. Personally, I don't think $400M comes close to what this will actually cost. And guess who will foot the bill? I agree with Bloomberg -- NYC should NOT have to cover it. So, guess who will!
