NAACP TO HOLD 13th ANNUAL AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION

Salisbury….Wicomico County Branch #7028 of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host its 13th Annual African-American Celebration at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Chipman Cultural Center, 325 Broad Street, Salisbury. The keynote speaker, author David “Nicky” Henry, will speak to the theme “Continue the Fight for Bold Dreams, Big Victories in 2010.”

Mr. Henry was born in Cambridge, MD. He graduated from Mace’s Lane High School in Cambridge, MD in 1957, Bowie State College in 1963 and Coppin State University’s Graduate School in 1977. He was an educator and taught school for thirty-eight years. He retired in 2001 to fulfill his interest in creating pictorial history books about the African American Community of Cambridge-Dorchester County, MD. He has completed two volumes (released in 2005 and 2007) that are a collection of pictures that depict the accomplishments of local African Americans.

Returning to provide music and liturical dancing is Zeal of Zion Youth (from Mt. Zion UMC, Quantico, directed by Faye Wilson) and Voices United, a community choir representing members from Friendship, St. Luke, and Mt. Zion United Methodist Churches and New Missionary Baptist Church. The choir is under the direction of Faye Wilson and Linda Mitchell. By request, Zeal of Zion will perform one of their signature dances “Freedom.”

Also appearing are the Wesley Temple United Methodist Church Youth Praise Dancers and Youth Choir under the directorship of April Jackson.
