Kratovil Tours Ocean City Beaches; Pledges Federal Support For Beach Erosion Protection

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank Kratovil joined Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan and other City officials for a tour of the erosion and damage done to the city’s beaches and shoreline as a result of last week’s Nor’easter and Tropical Storm Ida.

The storm brought 40-60 mph gale force winds with steady rain over a period of five days, cutting off power to thousands of Delmarva residents as waves eroded much of the shoreline and dunes.

“These dunes represent the last line of defense for the homeowners and small businesses here in Ocean City, so it is critical that we assess the damage and begin the process of rebuilding. I’m here to see the storm’s impact firsthand and talk with Mayor Meehan about how we can work together to get the dunes and the beaches back to where they need to be,” said Rep. Kratovil. “I’ve told the Mayor before that I want to be his partner in Washington in fighting for federal beach replenishment resources, and that’s especially true today. We can’t prevent bad storms, but we can put ourselves in a position to minimize the damage when they hit.”

That should be Expected from any MD representative.

This happens every year.. nature moves the beach, and the TAXPAYERS have to move it back.
A new law-- anyone building within one mile of the beach is on their own-- no bailouts, no emergency response.
Maybe if you start collecting USER FEES at the Rt50 and 90 bridges into OC, and at the north end of town and use that for beach replenishment, things would be more fair.
Or just visit the beach, wherever it happens to end up next summer, eh?

Interesting - Maryland is trying to figure out what to do a week after the storm passed: in North Carolina they've rebuilt the major N-S highway (Rte 12) where it washed out, cleaned up roadside debris within 72 hours of flood waters receding, condemned 48 homes and ordered clean up of the 13 in the ocean. No talk of trying to compete with mother nature to see who is more powerful - her normal powers vs our constantly spending $$Millions - just clean up what's left and more on.

We are broke, how many more millions of dollars are we going to throw into the ocean? It's all wastefull spending and Kratovil should forget spending our tax dollars on this endless project.

If you want to see how this plays out, look at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The sea is coming west, OC is located on a barrier island. They move.
